EXTRAIT Qu’on juge de la force du flux polaire et de la violence de cet affouillement par le creux qu’il a fait entre Cherbourg et Brest. Cette formation du golfe de la Manche aux dépens du sol français est antérieure aux temps historiques. La dernière voie de fait décisive de l’océan sur notre côte a pourtant date certaine. En 709, soixante ans avant l’avènement de Charlemagne, un coup de mer a détaché Jersey de la France. D’autres sommets des terres antérieurement submergées sont, comme Jersey, visibles. Ces pointes qui sortent de l’eau, sont des îles. C’est ce qu’on nomme l’archipel normand. Il y a là une laborieuse fourmilière humaine. À PROPOS DE L’AUTEUR En 1851, en réaction au coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851, perpétré par Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, Victor Hugo (1802-1885) fuit la France pour un exil de dix-neuf années, dont quinze seront passées à Hauteville House, la maison de Guernesey après avoir été chassé de Jersey. C’est dans les îles anglo-normandes que le poète, dramaturge et romancier s’établit et trouve son inspiration, publiant certaines de ces œuvres majeures, parmi lesquelles Les Châtiments et Les Misérables.
