First published in 1981, Victorian Values is an investigation into the social causes behind the decline of the birth rate and the size of families in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century. The author looks at the interplay of the rising standard of living, the emancipation of women, the attitude to children and education and the effects of the meritocratic ideal, and their interaction with religious ideas of sexual morality. He considers the pioneers of birth control, but other factors are considered which might contribute to the retreat from the very large families of an earlier period. On the one hand it is a time of revolutionary inventions, rapid industrialisation and further expansion of the Empire. On the other hand it is also a time, when a huge number of people lived in poorest conditions and crime and prostitution were daily fare. What is commonly understood by the term 'Victorian values' today – decency, chastity, diligence, godliness –, was not a common place neither in the working class nor in high society. One may say that the strong notion of morality, which was embodied most profoundly by the institution of marriage, was in fact systematically trespassed by all social classes. Hypocrisy was considered to be the worst vice by Victorians and yet it seems to have been prevalent by the end of the 19th century. It is also the late period of the Victorian era that saw comedies mocking the rigid and yet inconsequent morality. Most prominent plays are those by Oscar Wilde, but before we look closer at the way he satirised the Victorian society, it is first helpful to examine some of the characteristics of that society, which play an important role in his works. The first aspect worth mentioning is the fact that Victorian England was a class society with strictly defined roles of each class. The time is marked not only by the obvious dominance of the aristocracy that became even richer due to industrial development (e.g. coal mines), but also by the formation of a middle-class striving for profit and more power, which eventually led to so-called Reform Act. On the other hand, however, there was a vast majority of poor workers, which caused tremendous social problems and became also an important topic of English literature. [...]

The term is related to the reign of Queen Victoria of England from 1837 to 1901. Since it covers a wide time span, the era has been divided into the early-Victorian period (1837-1851), the mid-Victorian period (1851-1875) and the late-Victorian period (1875-1901). “Victorian” is also used today to describe British furniture and architecture made during the greater part of the 19th century. Additionally it refers to British literary works which were written, for instance by Wilkie Collins or Charles Dickens. Furthermore specific social and moral attitudes are associated with the word “Victorian.” The Victorian age was an age of transition. England was transformed from a feudal and agricultural society into an industrial democracy. Nevertheless the process of the industrial revolution did not only create progress but also problems. One drawback was the hierarchy which was created in the British society leading to a division of people into distinctive social classes. In order to analyze the class distinctions more precisely this term paper concentrates on the specific class divisions that arose especially between the middle class and the working class and on how these differences were characterized. In addition, the three well known Victorian values of the middle and working class, family life, respectability and self-help, are defined and discussed. Due to the fact that it is not possible to discuss the whole Victorian period as one homogenous era, the discussion of the social classes and their values is restricted to the mid-Victorian period. In order to understand the society in the Victorian era it is necessary to depict a brief overview of the historical circumstances concerning the Victorian society.
