TERESA was born at Avila on Wednesday, March 28, 1515, and baptized on April 4, in the parish church of San Juan, the very day on which the first Mass was celebrated in the new church of the convent of the Incarnation. Her god-father was Vela Nuñez, and the god-mother Doña Maria del Aguila. The name she received in baptism, Teresa, of frequent occurrence in Spain in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, was common to the families of both her father and mother; for her great-grandmother on the father’s side was Teresa Sanchez, and her grandmother on her mother’s side was Teresa de las Cuevas.

Este libro de carácter autobiográfico recoge la vida de santa Teresa de Jesús. Además de reflejar muy bien una época y sus costumbres, resulta la confesión donde la autora dialoga con Dios y con su propia alma, con la sinceridad, sencillez y entrega que caracterizan su obra vital y literaria. Con el precedente de las Confesiones de San Agustín y el parecido coetáneo en la Autobiografía de San Ignacio de Loyola, esta autobiografía de la Santa pretende explicar a los demás y a sí misma la “merced” que ha recibido con su vocación religiosa. Por tanto, la naturaleza del texto resulta dual, ya que se mueve entre el relato de su vida y el afán aleccionador. Su tesis es que su vida tiene sentido por la presencia de Dios en ella. En vida de la Santa, este libro fue secuestrado por la Inquisición (1575), que lo retuvo hasta que, muerta la autora, se analizó la conveniencia de editarlo. Recuperado entonces el manuscrito original, sería fray Luis de León quien publicara por primera vez la obra, en Salamanca, y en 1588.
