As Poesias de Olavo Bilac, publicadas em 1888, foram recebidas com um coro de louvores, como poucos livros na literatura brasileira. Apesar do parnasianismo já estar vitorioso, a obra era uma novidade, "pela graça fluente da linguagem poética" (Manuel Bandeira). A perfeição dos versos, palpitantes de vida e sensualismo, contrastam com a tão apregoada frieza marmórea da escola e a própria Profissão de Fé com que o poeta abria o volume, exaltando a perfeição fria do verso, talhado em "o alvo cristal, a pedra rara,/ o ônix". Por essa época, Bilac (Rio de Janeiro, 1865) era um dos boêmios mais conhecidos da cidade, levando uma vida que escandalizava as famílias. Depois de abandonar, sucessivamente, os cursos de medicina, no Rio de Janeiro, e de direito, em São Paulo, entregou-se ao jornalismo, profissão mal remunerada, o que o obrigou a utilizar múltiplos pseudônimos, para sobreviver. Em 1893, durante a revolta da armada, colocou-se contra Floriano Peixoto, sendo preso. Libertado, exilou-se em Minas Gerais, a princípio em Ouro Preto e mais tarde em Juiz de Fora. Ocupou cargos importantes, foi um dos fundadores da Academia Brasileira de Letras, viajou várias vezes à Europa, publicou livros de crônicas, contos, literatura infantil. Em seu último livro de poemas, póstumo, Tarde (1919), o poeta substitui o sensualismo pelo temas nacionalistas. Já se percebem os sinais do crepúsculo. Durante essa fase, dedicou-se à campanha pelo serviço militar obrigatório. Faleceu em 1918, em plena glória. A opinião geral do país podia então ser resumida na frase de João do Rio: "Bilac chegou à perfeição - é sagrado". Era também um poeta muito popular, graças sobretudo à sua lírica amorosa, expressa nos 35 sonetos da Via Láctea. "Virgens Amorosas" era um soneto que milhares de brasileiros sabiam de cor. Esta é a melhor consagração.
