Na época do Brasil Imperial, cada barco que trazia uma nova leva de imigrantes estava repleto de incertezas. Desde pequena, Jacobina sofria ataques nervosos, o que de certo modo foi confundido com um poder religioso que a faria capaz de transmitir a voz de Cristo. A fé dos muckers ia de encontro ao protestantismo da maioria dos imigrantes e ao catolicismo dos brasileiros, pois o que Jacobina ofereceia era maior que os ensinamentos religiosos, era a própria presença divina.
