This volume presents a collection of approaches to the emerging field of video analysis in the social sciences. Although the importance of visual qualitative methods has increased, video analysis cannot draw upon a single method or methodology. Therefore this book will structure the diverse approaches in order to identify their traditions. It assembles studies from linguistic anthropology as well as conversation analysis, sociological hermeneutics, ethnography, phenomenology and finally focused ethnography. Practical questions will be asked, as for instance, how the fact of being filmed affects the situation that is being filmed and theoretical questions will be posed, as for example, whether actions are subject to contingency or whether they are pre-determined.

Video provides unprecedented opportunities for social science research, enabling fine-grained analysis of social organisation, culture and communication. Video in Qualitative Research provides practical guidance for students and academics on how to use video in qualitative research, how to address the problems and issues that arise in undertaking video-based field studies and how to subject video recordings to detailed scrutiny and analysis. Heath, Hindmarsh and Luff consider the ethical and practical issues that arise in recording and gathering data as well as how video enables new and distinctive ways of presenting insights, observations and findings to both academic and practitioner audiences. The book is illustrated throughout with a wide range of case material drawn from the authors own research projects, and these cases serve to situate the practical and methodological guidance offered by the book into real research scenarios. Video in Qualitative Research is an invaluable guide for students and researchers across the social sciences thinking of using video as part of their research. This book investigates interaction-focused scholarship on online communication. It focuses on a broad range of online contexts including social media, dating apps, online comments, instant messaging and video-mediated interaction. Bringing together experts from a variety of scholarly backgrounds, chapters demonstrate how different microanalytic methods, including conversation analysis, membership categorization analysis and discursive psychology, can be applied to online communication. The book also goes on to address ethical, methodological and theoretical issues of analysing online social interaction. With the explosion of the use of online platforms for everyday and institutional interaction, this book is a timely collection which explores the current state of the field, and considers future directions for microanalysis of online communication.

"In this work, moving foreground objects are extracted from video. The video camera can be either stationary or panning. The motion information extracted from consecutive frames of video is used for object segmentation, and an appearance model of the moving object is created. No assumptions are made concerning the object model, resulting in segmented objects of varying shapes and sizes. Finally, relationships between objects in the image are evaluated toward the goal of higher level understanding of videos"--Abstract.
