In this new scene-by-scene breakdown of Videodrome, John David Ebert illuminates David Cronenberg's 1983 classic film utilizing ideas drawn from the fields of critical theory, comparative mythology and media studies. Borrowing concepts from such thinkers as Marshall McLuhan, Vilem Flusser and Jean Baudrillard. Ebert sees Videodrome as the tale of a man who becomes swallowed up inside of a televisual reality--as we all were by the 1980s--and lives in a world in which, as Baudrillard put it, the simulacra precede, and come to replace, the originals. The real is slowly displaced by the surreal, as Max Renn's reality is transubstantiated from a world of heavy matter composed of atoms and molecules to one made out of self-luminous matter composed of electrons and irridescent photons. The transformation is a profoundly disturbing and disorienting one as Cronenberg charts our society's descent into the rise and predominance of what theoretician Peter Sloterdijk calls "disinhibiting media," or media, that is, which encourage a climate of violence and spree killings.

Since the mid-1980s, US audiences have watched the majority of movies they see on a video platform, be it VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, Video On Demand, or streaming media. Annual video revenues have exceeded box office returns for over twenty-five years. In short, video has become the structuring discourse of US movie culture. Killer Tapes and Shattered Screens examines how prerecorded video reframes the premises and promises of motion picture spectatorship. But instead of offering a history of video technology or reception, Caetlin Benson-Allott analyzes how the movies themselves understand and represent the symbiosis of platform and spectator. Through case studies and close readings that blend industry history with apparatus theory, psychoanalysis with platform studies, and production history with postmodern philosophy, Killer Tapes and Shattered Screens unearths a genealogy of post-cinematic spectatorship in horror movies, thrillers, and other exploitation genres. From Night of the Living Dead (1968) through Paranormal Activity (2009), these movies pursue their spectator from one platform to another, adapting to suit new exhibition norms and cultural concerns in the evolution of the video subject.

The Medium Is The Monster written by Mark A. McCutcheon and has been published by Athabasca University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-21 with Social Science categories.

Technology, a word that emerged historically first to denote the study of any art or technique, has come, in modernity, to describe advanced machines, industrial systems, and media. McCutcheon argues that it is Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that effectively reinvented the meaning of the word for modern English. It was then Marshall McLuhan’s media theory and its adaptations in Canadian popular culture that popularized, even globalized, a Frankensteinian sense of technology. The Medium Is the Monster shows how we cannot talk about technology—that human-made monstrosity—today without conjuring Frankenstein, thanks in large part to its Canadian adaptations by pop culture icons such as David Cronenberg, William Gibson, Margaret Atwood, and Deadmau5. In the unexpected connections illustrated by The Medium Is the Monster, McCutcheon brings a fresh approach to studying adaptations, popular culture, and technology.

Pop stars have provided audiences with performative moments that have become ingrained in popular consciousness. They are a lens through which deeper understandings about race, gender, politics, history and the artistic process can be understood. When combined with the most affective of mediums – cinema, the combination can be both thrilling and alarming. From the relatively early days of cinema, figures from the world of popular music have made forays into acting and contributed cameo appearances. From Little Richard and Kylie Minogue to Nick Cave and Tom Waits, Pop Stars On Film: Popular Culture in a Global Market offers a collection of essays on some of the most influential international performances from a diverse range of cultural icons. The book considers industry shifts, access and diversity, but also the notion of cultural appropriation, audience appeal, marketing and demographics. Perhaps most importantly, the publication will look at what happens when cultures collide and coalesce.

The Politics Of Everyday Fear written by Brian Massumi and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Social Science categories.

The contemporary consumer is bombarded with fear-inducing images and information. This media shower of imagery is equalled only by the sheer quantity of fear-assuaging products offered for our consumption. "The Politics of Everyday Fear" addresses questions raised by the saturation of social space by capitalized fear. Emphasizing the relatively neglected domain of what might be called "ambient" fear - continually rekindled, low-level fear that insinuates itself into people's daily routine, subtly reshaping their lives - "The Politics of Everyday Fear" approaches fear less as a psychological fixation than a fluid mechanism for the social control order of late capitalism. Brian Massumi is the author of "User's Guide to Capitalism and Schizophrenia: Deviations From Deleuze and Guattari" (1992) and with Kenneth Dean of "First and Last Emperors: the Absolute State and the Body of the Despot (1992)". He has translated many books and written many essays on contemporary discourses. This book is intended for undergraduates and graduate students in media studies, interdisciplinary cultural theory, comparative literature, postmodernism, Marxism and post-structuralist media theory.
