Marie Poussepin, née en 1653 et morte en 1744, est l’une de ces grandes figures de femmes chrétiennes, qui ont fait l’honneur du Grand Siècle français. Dans cette pléiade de grandes âmes, elle a un caractère tout personnel. Les quarante-deux premières années de son existence se sont déroulées dans le Siècle, et elle y a joué un rôle important comme initiatrice du progrès industriel et commercial de Dourdan, sa ville natale. Elle y a transformé l’artisanat traditionnel de la fabrication des bas de soie à l’aiguille, par l’introduction des métiers à tisser la laine, selon les vues de Colbert et, par là, Dourdan a connu un siècle de grande prospérité. Mais, dès ce moment, cette activité de femme, d’affaires s’accompagnait — de sa part — d’un inlassable dévouement aux malades pauvres au sein de la Confrérie de Charité, dans l’esprit de Saint Vincent de Paul, où son âme trouva un épanouissement spirituel continu par l’amour de Dieu et du prochain. Ce n’était pourtant que la préparation à une plus grande mission. À quarante-deux ans, des circonstances providentielles lui faisaient découvrir la grande misère de son temps, celle des campagnes. Sacrifiant sa situation aisée et sa fortune, elle se consacra tout entière à y porter remède, dans la pauvreté et le travail, en s’établissant à Sainville — en Beauce — pour y fonder une communauté du tiers-ordre de Saint Dominique, pour instruire la jeunesse, et servir les pauvres malades de la paroisse. Sa lucidité charitable lui faisait discerner — dès l’abord — ce que Louis XIV allait inscrire dans sa politique : les petites écoles rurales, et la réforme des établissements hospitaliers. Quarante ans encore, elle allait y persévérer. Ce ne fut pas sans épreuves ni difficultés. Pendant douze ans, elle eut à défendre — contre l’évêque de Chartres — son projet dominicain, et attendre la reconnaissance légale de son institut religieux par le pouvoir royal. Mais son œuvre grandissait et, à sa mort, ses sœurs de charité dominicaines avaient essaimé dans vingt établissements de l’ancienne Île-de-France. Aujourd’hui, elles sont près de quatre mille, implantées sur quatre continents au service de toutes les pauvretés, fidèles à l’élan missionnaire qu’elles ont reçu de leur fondatrice. Trop peu connue jusqu’ici, Marie Poussepin, que l’Église se prépare à mettre au rang des Bienheureux, méritait qu’une biographie solidement fondée fasse connaître — à un large public — sa figure exceptionnelle. Il le fallait, d’autant plus que sa vie est un message toujours d’actualité. Elle nous dit que, devant les misères de tous les temps, il y a un appel universel et pressant à l’exercice de la charité.
