Excerpt from The Novels and Other Works of Lyof N. Tolstoi, Vol. 2: Resurrection It was morning before Nekhludoff could fall asleep, and therefore he woke late. At noon seven men chosen from among the peasants at the foreman's invitation, came into the orchard, where the foreman's invitation, came into the orchard, where the foreman had arranged a table and benches by digging posts into the ground, and fixing boards on the top, under the apple tees. It took some time before the peasants could be persuaded to put on their caps and to sit down in the benches. Especially firm was the ex-soldier, who to-day had bark shoes on. He stood erect, holding, his cap as they do at funerals, according to military regulation. When one of them, a respectable looking, brood shouldered old man, with a curly, grizzly beard like that of Michel Angelo's "Mouse," and grey hair that curled round the brown, bald forehead, put on his big cap, and, wrapping his coat round him, got in behind the tables and sat down, the rest followed his example. When all had taken their places, Nekhuludoff sat down opposite them and leaning on the table over the paper on which he had drawn up his project, he began explaining it. Excerpt from The Novels and Other Works of Lyof N. Tolstoi, Vol. 3: War and Peace But, besides these external political combinations, the attention of Russian society was at this time occupied with especial interest with the internal reforms which were inaugurating in all parts of the imperial dominion. In the meantime, life, - the ordinary life of men, with its own concerns of health, illness, labor, recreation, with its interest in philosophy, science, poetry, music, love, friendship, hatreds, sufferings, went on as always, independent and outside of political alliance or enmity with Napoleon Bonaparte, and outside of all possible reforms. Excerpt from Tales From Tolstoi: Translated From the Russian, With Biography of the Author The twelve tales contained in this volume appeared originally, from time to time, in the columns of the Nurses' Periodical, "Misericordia," during the years 1891-1899. They were intended in the first instance for the recreation of convalescent hospital patients, and for the nurses themselves, with no thought of republication. Tolstoi, ten years ago, was not nearly so well known in England as he is now, and many of these stories (some of which I was the first to translate), which have since become famous, then had all the charm of absolute novelty. In course of time these little masterpieces insensibly accumulated synchronously with the growth of the great Russian writer's popularity amongst us, so that I am now able to offer them in volume form to a larger public. The introductory biography is to a great extent derived from Tolstoi's own works, or from the writings of Russians who have known him, and contains many hitherto uncommunicated details. Finally, I must express my acknowledgments to the Editor of "Misericordia," the Rev. E. F. Russell, for his courtesy in permitting me to reproduce these stories in their present form. Tolstoy S Major Fiction written by Edward Wasiolek and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Literary Criticism categories.

"Edward Wasiolek, after much valuable work on Dostoevsky, has now written one of the best books on Tolstoy in recent decades. This may be in part because of his preoccupation with Tolstoy's most challenging contemporary, and the resulting sense of their unlikeness in a common pursuit. But there are other, unspeculative reasons. Few studies of Tolstoy have been so carefully pondered and so firmly organized to convince; and not so many show the flexibility and variety of its approach. Wasiolek proposes an essentially simple and consistent reading, but he advances it with subtlety and discretion."—Henry Gifford, Times Literary Supplement
