This is the second collection of studies by Stephen D. White to be published by Variorum (the first being Feuding and Peace-Making in Eleventh-Century France). The essays in this volume look principally at France and England from Merovingian and Anglo-Saxon times up to the 12th century. They analyze Latin and Old French discourses that medieval nobles used to construct their relationships with kin, lords, men, and friends, and investigate the political dimensions of such relationships with particular reference to patronage/clientage, the use of land as an item of exchange, and feuding. In so doing, the essays call into question the conventional practice of studying kinship and feudalism as independent systems of legal institutions and propose new strategies for studying them.

Greek And Roman Maps written by Oswald Ashton Wentworth Dilke and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

In Greek and Roman Maps, O. A. W. Dilke follows the development of map-making skills, beginning in Babylonia and Egypt, through the contributions of Greek scientists and Roman administrators and surveyors, to the Age of Discovery. He provides examples of the full range of Greek and Roman maps, including town and building plans, itineraries and road maps, sea itineraries, and maps in art form. "It is an extremely useful book, packed with information, simply and succinctly expressed... there is no doubt that it was Greek theoretical thinking and a growing knowledge of geography, combined with the practical demands imposed upon the administrators of the Roman Empire, which led to the development and widespread use of maps more or less as we know them." -- Mary E. Hoskins Walbank, Echos du monde classique

About 130 Latin inscriptions shine a fascinating light on the medium-sized Roman town of Grumentum in ancient Lucania. Most of these stones have hardly been studied since the end of the 19th century. They now for the first time appear in a scholarly edition with revised Latin text, illustration, apparatus criticus, translation and extensive commentary. Both the introduction and the edition illustrate the richness of the material: archaeology, politics, institutions, the Roman army, economy, religion, family and life course, and Christianity are dealt with. The use learned scholars made of the inscriptions opens a window to Italian intellectual history from the Renaissance on. Written and presented in an accessible way, this volume avoids the pitfalls of highly technical epigraphical editions, and opens the field to archaeologists, (ancient) historians and a more general audience with an interest for Roman sites in general, and this hidden gem in Basilicata in particular.

Morals And Villas In Seneca S Letters written by John Henderson and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-03-04 with Literary Collections categories.

John Henderson explores three letters of Seneca describing visits to Roman villas, and surveys the whole collection to show how these villas work as designs for contrasting lives. Seneca's own place is ageing drastically; a recent Epicurean's paradise is a seductive oasis away from the dangers of Nero's Rome; once a fortress of the dour Rome of yesteryear, the legendary Scipio's lair was now a shrine to the old morality: Seneca revels in its primitive bath-house, dark and cramped, before exploring the garden with the present owner. Seneca brings the philosophical epistle to Latin literature, creating models for moralizing which feature self-criticism, parody and re-animated myth. Virgil and Horace come in for rough handling, as the Latin moralist wrests ethical practice and writing away from Greek gurus and texts, and into critical thinking within a Roman context. Here is powerful teaching on metaphor and translation, on self-transformation and cultural tradition.

Peachin, M. Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology, A.D. 235-284. 1989 This study is a basic work of reference for the history of the Roman Empire during the midthird century A.D. The book consists of two principal parts. Part two, upon which the first is based, is a catalogue that lists all known variants of the titulature of each emperor from this period. In turn, each variant is accompanied by a list of all attestations (including coins, inscriptions, papyri) of that formula. An introduction traces briefly the historical development of the official titular formula, and then discusses the method of granting this formula at the beginning of the period in question. The introduction is followed by a chapter that evaluates the source material. Given a secure basic understanding of how the ancient testimonia are to be employed, the book then progresses to a chapter that sets out a complete chronology for the period.SA 29 (1989), 543 p.
