Human life is susceptible of changing suddenly, of shifting inadvertently, of appearing differently, of varying unpredictably, of being altered deliberately, of advancing fortuitously, of commencing or ending accidentally, of a certain malleability. In theory, any human being is potentially capacitated to conceive of—and convey—the chance, view, or fact that matters may be otherwise, or not at all; with respect to other lifeforms, this might be said animal’s distinctive characteristic. This state of play is both an everyday phenomenon, and an indispensable prerequisite for exceptional innovations in culture and science: contingency is the condition of possibility for any of the arts—be they dominantly concerned with thinking, crafting, or enacting. While their scope and method may differ, the (f)act of reckoning with—and taking advantage of—contingency renders rhetoricians and philosophers associates after all. In this regard, Aristotle and Blumenberg will be exemplary, hence provide the framework. Between these diachronic bridgeheads, close readings applying the nexus of rhetoric and contingency to a selection of (Early) Modern texts and authors are intercalated—among them La Celestina, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Wilde, Fontane.

Die Idee eines selbständigen Bandes von "Pfander-Studien" entstand nach dem Internationalen Kongreß "Die Münchener Phänomenologie", der an läßlich des hundertsten Geburtstags von Alexander Pfander in München stattfand. Ursprünglich war geplant, die im zweiten Teil des Kongresses im Rahmen einer Arbeitstagung über "Das Werk und die Bedeutung Alexander pfänders" gehaltenen Referate, die bereits vervielfältigt waren, nebst Diskussionsberichten in den vorgesehenen Gesamtband über die Konferenz für die Serie Phaenomenologica einzuschlie ßen. Als sich herausstellte, daß der dort verfügbare Raum -für die meisten Beiträge zu knapp bemessen war und nur die abgekürz ten Texte ohne Diskussion hätten aufgenommen werden' können, tauchte die Idee eines gesonderten Bandes auf. Sie führte alsbald zur Erwägung neuer Beiträge und sonstiger Hilfen für das Ver ständnis des alten und neuen Werkes Pfänders. Von den Kon greßbeiträgen war ohnehin der von Karl Schuhmann ftir ein gesondertes selbständiges Buch" Husserl über Pfänder" vorgese hen, das inzwischen in der Reihe Phaenomenologica erschienen ist. 1 Der Beitrag von Peter Schwankl "Alexander pfänders Nachlaßtexte über das virtuell Psychische" erschien im Journal 0/ Phenomenological Psychology. 2 Die beiden einleitenden Refe rate von Schwankl und Spiegel berg über die damals noch unge druckten Nachlaßwerke Philosophie auf phänomenologischer Grundlage und Ethik in kurzer Darstellung konnten nach deren Erscheinen fortbleiben.

In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art's sovereign power to subvert reason without falling into an error common to Adorno's negative dialectics and Derrida's deconstruction. Recent discussions of aesthetics, whether in the hermeneutic or the analytic tradition, understand the place of art and aesthetic experience according to a model of autonomy--as just one among the many modes of experience that make up the realm of reason, situated beside the other spheres of value. In contrast, Theodor Adorno and Jacques Derrida view art and aesthetic experience as a medium for the dissolution of nonaesthetic reason, an experientially enacted critique of reason. Art is not only autonomous, following its own law, different from nonaesthetic reason, but sovereign: it subverts the rule of reason.In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art's sovereign power to subvert reason without falling into an error common to Adorno's negative dialectics and Derrida's deconstruction. The error, which already appeared in romanticism, is to conceive of the sovereignty of art as reflecting the superiority of its knowledge. For art entails no knowledge and its negativity toward reason cannot be articulated as an insight into the nature of reason: art is sovereign not despite, but because of, its autonomy. Menke brings to his arguments a firm grounding in both philosophy and literary studies, as well as familiarity with German, French, and American sources.

Bei der Herausgabe der KLEINschen Vorlesung über die hyper geometrische Funktion erschienen nur zwei Wege gangbar: Entweder eine durchgreifende Umarbeitung, auch im großen, oder eine möglichst weitgehende Erhaltung der ursprünglichen Form. Vor allem auch aus historischen Gründen wurde der letztere Weg beschritten. Daher ist die Anordnung des Stoffes erhalten geblieben; e, s ist nur, von kleinen Änderungen abgesehen, ein Exkurs über homogene Schreibweise aus der KLEINschen Vorlesung über lineare Differentialgleichungen ein gefügt, ferner sind die Schlußbemerkungen zur geometrischen Theorie im Falle komplexer Exponenten als durch die Arbeiten von F. SCHILLING überholt, weggelassen. Aus dem obengenannten Grunde sind beispiels weise auch Entwicklungen beibehalten worden, die heute schon dem Anfänger geläufig sind (etwa die Ausführungen über stereographische Projektion). In Rücksicht auf möglichste Erhaltung der KLEINschen Darstellung sind ferner Hinweise des Herausgebers auf inzwischen ge machte Fortschritte der Wissenschaft vom Texte getrennt als Anmerkun gen am Schluß zusammengestellt. Diese Hinweise erheben aber in keiner Weise den Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Bei der nicht zu um gehenden Revision des Textes im einzelnen ist, dem oben angegebenen Gesichtspunkt entsprechend, möglichste Wahrung des persönlichen KLEINschen Stils angestrebt. übrigens habe ich darauf Bedacht genommen, auch dem A nlänger die Lektüre durch Anmerkungen und durch Nachweise der KLEINschen Zitate zu erleichtern. Denn zweifellos bieten gerade diese Vorlesungen eine treffliche Ergänzung und Weiterführung dessen, was der Studierende mittleren Semesters an Geometrie und Funktionentheorie kennen gelernt hat.
