Stalingrad in the jungle: the battle that doomed the French Empire and led America into Vietnam In winter 1953-54 the French army in Vietnam challenged its elusive enemy, General Giap's Viet Minh, to pitched battle. Ten thousand French paras and légionnaires, with artillery and tanks, were flown to the remote valley of Dien Bien Phu to build a fortress upon which Giap could smash his inexperienced regiments. The siege which followed became a Stalingrad in the jungle, and its outcome shocked the world.

A monumental work of research and analysis, this is a history of the Vietnam War in a single province of the Mekong Delta over the period 1930-1975. More precisely, it is a study of the Vietnamese dimension of the "Vietnam War, " focusing on the revolutionary movement that became popularly known as the "Viet Cong." There are several distinctive features to this study: (1) it provides an explanation for the paradox of why the revolutionary movement was so successful during the war, but unable to meet the challenges of postwar developments; (2) it challenges the dominant theme of contemporary political analysis which assumes that people are "rational" actors responding to events with careful calculations of self-interest; (3) it closely examines province-level documentation that casts light on a number of important historical controversies about the war. No other history of the Vietnam War has drawn on such a depth of documentation, especially firsthand accounts that allow the Vietnamese participants to spea directly to us.

A Special Forces medic delivers “a fascinating account of an unfamiliar part of the Vietnamese War, written in a compelling style” (History Of War). During the Vietnam War, US Army Special Forces A-Teams were deployed to isolated outposts or “camps” in the remote areas of South Vietnam. Their job was to recruit, train, and house members of the indigenous population while molding them into combat-ready fighting units. A-Teams consisted of up to twelve Green Beret soldiers who were experts in both combat and their individual military specialties. Bac Si, the Vietnamese term for “medic,” is the story of Sgt. Jerry Krizan, who was assigned to Special Forces Camp A-331 in the III Corps tactical zone, only ten miles from the Cambodian border. Because of its proximity to a major north-south North Vietnamese Army infiltration route, there were constant enemy troop movements through the camp’s area of operations and A-331 itself came under attack on more than one occasion. The author accompanied patrols and probes into enemy territory, not only prepared to provide aid but fight as a soldier if the squad was ambushed or chose to attack. In this small-unit warfare against an expert enemy, US soldiers had to survive as best they could, with their only succor a Huey—meantime, on the ground, by themselves against unknown opposition. Our Green Beret base camps were our very first line of defense along the borders of South Vietnam, and in this book, through the eyes of a medic, we learn how dire, and confusing, a role we asked our Special Forces to play during that era.

There can be few people in the world that do not know the name, location and recent history of Vietnam. Yet beyond the period of US involvement in what Americans call the 'Vietnam War' how much is really known?Almost no Vietnamese bear a grudge against the USA, but this is less true for China, Vietnam's close neighbor, mentor and rival for more than two thousand years. For example, Vietnamese like to name their streets after what they consider to have been 'acts of foreign aggression', and in Hanoi no fewer than 119 streets are named after 'acts of Chinese and French aggression'. By contrast, just two are named for 'acts of American aggression'.Based on an intimate personal knowledge of Vietnam extending over two decades, this book explores Hanoi and the North. It leads the reader not just across contemporary Tonkin, but also through its long history, linking the present-day with the distant past.62,000 words, 81 contemporary images, 38 historical images, 4 maps, Glossary, Bibliography

Vietnamese Home Cooking written by Charles Phan and has been published by Jacqui Small this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Cooking, Vietnamese categories.

When Charles Phan opened his now-legendary restaurant, The Slanted Door, in 1995, he introduced American food lovers to a new world of Vietnamese food: robustly flavoured, subtly nuanced, authentic yet influenced by local ingredients and, ultimately, entirely approachable. Phan’s recipes are based on the premise that with an understanding of its central techniques and fundamental ingredients, Vietnamese home cooking can be as attainable and understandable as French, Italian or American. With solid instruction and encouraging guidance, perfectly crisp imperial rolls, tender steamed dumplings, delicately flavoured whole fish and meaty lemongrass beef stew are all deliciously close at hand. Abundant photography detailing techniques and equipment, and vibrant shots of Vietnam itself, make for equal parts elucidation and inspiration. Infused with the author’s stories and experiences, from his early days as a refugee to his current culinary success, Vietnamese Home Cooking is a personal and accessible guide to real Vietnamese cuisine.
