Es ist hier nicht der Ort, die Bedeutung Frankls für die Psychotherapie, die Psychologie und die Philosophie zu würdigen. Frankls Auffassung – und hier stellt er sich auch in Gegensatz zu Sigmund Freud und Alfred Adler – daß Neurosen auf ungelöste metaphysische Fragen verweisen, seine Auseinandersetzung mit den Konstanten des Menschseins wie Leiden, Schuld, oder Tod implizieren unabdi- bar die Sinnfrage. Daß Viktor Frankl durch die Hölle der Konzentrationslager gegangen ist, macht seine Gedanken und sein ärztliches Handeln auch im Hinblick auf die in solchen Grenzsituationen naheliegende Sinnlosigkeit und deren Überwindung bedeutsam.

Die Logotheorie (Logotherapie und Existenzanalyse) ist heutzutage besonders aktuell. Man sieht dies unter anderem daran, dass sich sehr viele und aus sehr verschiedenen Zusammenhängen auf Viktor E. Frankl beziehen; Logotheorie scheint somit zurzeit in Mode zu sein. Natürlich ist es gut, wenn ein genuines Interesse am Denken von Frankl wächst, da die Sorgen, die er präsentiert, und die Lösungen, die er anbietet, nicht an Zeit und Ort gebunden sind. Daher sind Frankls Gedanken in der heutigen Welt genauso aktuell, wie sie es in seiner Zeit im 20. Jahrhundert waren. Der Autor dieses Buches macht sich jedoch ernste Sorgen über die aufgetretene Gefahr, dass der Kern der ursprünglichen Logotheorie verloren gehen könnte, wenn er mit verschiedenen Betonungen an jede Art von Verwendungszweck angepasst und umgestaltet wird. Der Zweck dieses Buches ist zu erläutern, was in der Logotheorie den wesentlichen Kern ausmacht, ohne den es nicht begründet ist, von einer auf der Logotheorie beruhenden Vorgehensweise oder von deren Anwendung zu sprechen. Er möchte mit der vorliegenden Arbeit auch dafür sorgen, dass die genau für die Logotheorie notwendigen Gedanken nicht ausgelassen oder separat aus der Ganzheit und deswegen irgendwie falsch interpretiert und in andere Systeme bzw. Verwendungszwecke inkorporiert werden. Damit die Identität der von Viktor Frankl selbst verfassten Logotheorie geschützt werden kann, wird in diesem Buch genau das in den Mittelpunkt gestellt, was sie so einzigartig macht und sie als eine komplette, abgerundete Theorie betrachten lässt.
