Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 15,0, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, language: English, abstract: The following work will firstly give a brief definition of the term "evil" and its representations in literature, secondly it will analyze Joanne Kathleen Rowling's depiction of evil in her Harry Potter-series by means of Lord Voldemort's development, actions and character on the basis of the storyline and her literary language in order to emphasize how she succeeded in creating the ultimate evil character. Afterwards, a brief comparison of Voldemort and two other antagonists, William Shakespeare's Iago and Suzanne Collins' President Snow will be elaborated to shortly delineate the commonalities of this characters and the development of villains in literature. Although the last movie has been published in 2011 and the last book in 2007, Joanne Kathleen Rowling's Harry Potter-series still manages to be up-to-date, so that its main plot and leading roles have become some sort of general knowledge. Rowling succeeded in creating such a prepossessing and impressive fictional world, that it made her to one of the wealthiest women of the world. Despite the fact that the story itself prepossesses its readers, the characters that Rowling created are impressive and famous. Especially Rowling's antagonist Lord Voldemort tends to remain on the reader's and society's mind due to his immense cruelty.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: This term paper examines the origins of the lack of female villains in contemporary popular culture. The thesis aims to explain that female villains are more dangerous because of their sex. In contemporary popular culture the most villains are men. It is very unlikely that the main villain could be a woman. Mostly men are the villain and the hero in popular culture and literature. What is the reason for that? What is the reason for such a sexist image of women? Why are there so few female villains? Why are there so few female heroes? I want to find an answer to these questions by taking a closer look on the death eater Bellatrix Lestrange of the Harry Potter series. She is the most evil character, not only in the Harry Potter series, but also of all fictional female villains one can imagine. I am going to compare her character to the one of Lord Voldemort, the most powerful male villain of the Harry Potter books. Not only will I compare the male to the female villain, but also take a closer look on the relation between Bellatrix Lestrange and another female character of Harry Potter, that takes an important role in the plot. Bellatrix Lestrange compared to Molly Weasley, who killed the death eater during the final battle of Hogwarts. After having compared Bellatrix Lestrange with the other female character, I will come to the final comparison of Bellatrix and Lord Voldemort; the comparison of a female and a male villain.

Broken Wand: Or How J.K. Rowling Killed Harry Potter is a detailed critique by Timothy A. Wolf of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last book in Rowling's acclaimed series, and how he believes she disregarded everything she wrote in her previous novels. For Harry Potter fans, Broken Wand is must-have reading Using the actual texts, the author finds issues with Rowling's continuity. Like the Trace Charm that would have made it impossible for the teenage Voldemort to get away with killing his Muggle relatives. Or the idea of Harry carrying a piece of Voldemort's soul inside him from the start, when the Dark Lord couldn't even touch him for the first four books. Or "wandlore," which has no consistency to it at all. Citing plot elements like: questioning Harry's account of the murder in the previous book, the Ministry taking over Hogwarts, Snape's Pensieve memories, and Dumbledore explaining his mistakes; Broken Wand maintains that Rowling's Deathly Hallows is essentially just a bad copy of the fifth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Wolf also contends that Dumbledore, Snape, Lily Potter, and Voldemort are completely out of character, and Harry merely repeats the same emotional journey he went through before. Plus, there are many questions and plots left unresolved. About the Author: Timothy A. Wolf spent two years researching and writing Broken Wand. As a science fiction reader his entire life and an adult fan of the Harry Potter novels, he wanted to bring the problems he found with the final book to light. He lives in Franklin, Wisconsin. The millions of fans of Dracula and Harry Potter consist of all ages and varied enthusiasm, ranging from a curious reader or leisure cinema observer to seriously devoted academic scholars. However, followers of each universe have been chiefly segregated &– rarely mingling apart from an occasional culture convention, dominated by Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel heroes' groupies. But Stoker and Rowling readers have a lot in common because Count Dracula and Lord Voldemort have much in common. These two internationally acclaimed bestselling novels possess a remarkable kinship.Prepare to be delightfully surprised to discover that the godfather of all vampires and the infamous dark wizard share a deep character bond that goes far beyond the title &‘monster.' Be intrigued to uncover what a coffin and a horcrux share or to dig further to unearth that the often-overlooked scars which Bram Stoker wrote of in Victorian England are just as significant as those described by J.K. Rowling in the modern era. Indeed, it cannot be mere coincidence that Dracula is born in 1897 and 100 years later, Harry is too.A Tale of Two Villains is a love letter to both sets of fans paying homage to two superb authors and their extraordinary respective works, setting both masterpieces on pedestals, side by side for the first time, exploring their similar themes, unique parallelism, and mystical symbolism. Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Frankfurt (Main), 24 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Harry Potter is a heptalogy of fantasy novels by the English author Joanne K. Rowling about an adolescent boy named Harry Potter, first published in England in 1997. Harry Potter attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a boarding school for young wizards and witches. Up to his eleventh birthday his cruel relatives, the Dursleys, have raised the orphaned Harry. On this day he learns that he is a wizard and has been invited to attend Hogwarts. The story is mostly set on the school premises, with each of the seven volumes describing a school year at Hogwarts and a year of Harry's growing-up. The main topic is Harry Potter's fight against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort who killed Harry's parents when he was still an infant. Throughout the story the Dark Lord Voldemort gains more and more power and tries to kill Harry several times. In Hallows the climax is reached and the final battle between Harry and Lord Voldemort which will decide the future of the wizarding world. The fight of good versus evil is one of the oldest topics of mankind. Starting with the original sin in the Garden of Eden this fight has dominated moral concepts of the Christian world ever since. This paper presents an analysis of how good and evil are portrayed and presented in the Harry Potter series. First, there is a description of Christian motifs in the series and how these motifs can be compared to certain characters in the books. Second, 'good' characters such as Harry's close friends Ron and Hermione, and Harry's mentor, Professor Dumbledore, are described and characterised as to why they are part of the 'good'. Third, the 'evil' opponents Draco Malfoy and the evil Dark Lord Voldemort are analysed as to how they exhibit 'evil' behaviour. The last chapter deals with the quest

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: good minus, University of Münster (English Seminar), language: English, abstract: In novels and fictional stories we often meet good and evil characters, characters which fight each other. This fight between good and evil makes the story really interesting and exciting because it hurries the action along. But often the reader is not able to say which character really belongs to the good or the evil ones. It is the ambiguity of the characters and their changes during the story that grip the readers. This paper will have a look at one exemplary character and try to solve the question whether it is good or evil. Besides, the thesis that animals and creatures in The Prisoner of Azkaban cannot be categorized as clearly as the main characters will be dealt with. In this way different aspects of the terms "good" and "evil" shall be demonstrated. "Good" and "evil" represent a pair of opposites that is part of many stories and of our whole life. Actions which are against virtues and values, which are reprehensible and damnable, are generally seen as evil. Pleasure in destroying, in lying, in betraying and in being cruel, in neglecting the rights of human beings, these aspects are declared to be evil.1 They belong to actions and their consequences which are caused by human beings, for example torturing innocent people in a war. Due to St. Augustine, these are moral evils or deficiencies of man's will. He thinks of the moral evil as the true evil because human beings have free will and the choice to do good or evil. So it is their choice to commit evil actions or not.2 [...] 1 See Rudolf Eisler, ed. Wörterbuch der philosophischen Begriffe 1, 4th ed. (Berlin: Mittler und Sohn, 1927), p. 227. 2 See Ester S. Buchholz and Joshua K. Mandel, "Reaching for Virtue, Stumbling on Sin: Concepts of Good and Evil in a Postmodern Era.", Journal of Religion and Health 39.2, (2000): p. 130.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 15 Punkte, Gustav-von-Schlör-Schule Specialized Secondary Schooland Upper Vocational School, language: English, abstract: This seminar paper aims to display the conflict between Good and Evil, shown in the "Harry Potter" film series distributed by Warner Bros., which is based on the novel by J.K. Rowling. The conflict is focused on Harry Potter, as the good guy, and Lord Voldemort, as his evil opponent. This paper essentially consists of two main parts, the theoretical and analytical section, and a conclusion at the end. The very start, however, gives the reader a raw notion of the typical interpretation of “Good” and “Evil”. Then, the paper gives a brief synopsis of the Harry Potter story, to figure out what the plot of Harry Potter is about. The theoretical part contains two significant subdivisions. It deals with structuralism and post-structuralism, as well as with three subsections of post-structuralism, which are deconstruction in literature and film studies and finally with binary oppositions. The most important goal is to figure out what the deconstruction and binary oppositions are about and make it clear how they are applied in movies. Afterwards, the seminar paper goes firsthand into the analytical part, which is the second section and considers a deconstructive analysis if the representation of Good and Evil are either in their pure form or categories with flowing borders in the film series “Harry Potter”. The most significant thing in this part is to split up the movie into essential pieces, like the visual aspects and sound design. Another essential point is to figure out their equalities, differences and in certain circumstances the connections to each other.
