Spain’s Priorat region, in Catalonia, has a proud wine tradition that it traces back to the Carthusian monks of the 12th century, who founded the Scala Dei monastery and planted the first vineyard. This detailed guide highlights the fruits of that tradition, providing avid enotourists with extensive profiles and GPS coordinates for 104 wine producers in the region, as well as tasting notes for more than 300 wines, suggested itineraries, maps, and color photos of the spectacular terraced vineyards. Information on Priorat’s history as well as its cultural and culinary traditions is also provided, making this a must-have resource for any visitor to Catalonia.

Often mistakenly referred to as the “affordable Priorat” which it wraps around, the DO Montsant was established just 10 years ago but has been a land of family winemakers for centuries. A rolling landscape, it’s boxed in by the sharp, craggy Montsant mountain range from which the wines receive their name. Countless lovely old vines (older even than those in neighboring Priorat) of Grenache, Carignan, and Tempranillo form the backbone of the wines in this crescent shaped zone. The first edition of this enotourism guide has 65 extensive winery profiles in Montsant with GPS coordinates, hundreds of full color photos, maps, and tasting notes for 225 wines.

During spontaneous food/beverage fermentations, the microbiota associated with the raw material has a considerable importance: this microbial consortium evolves in reason of the nutrient content and of the physical, chemical, and biological determinants present in the food matrix, shaping fermentation dynamics with significant impacts on the ‘qualities’ of final productions. The selection from the indigenous micro-biodiversity of ‘virtuous’ ecotypes that coupled pro-technological and biotechnological aptitudes provide the basis for the formulation of ‘tailored’ starter cultures. In the fermenting food and beverage arena, the wine sector is generally characterized by the generation of a high added value. Together with a pronounced seasonality, this feature strongly contributes to the selection of a large group of starter cultures. In the last years, several studies contributed to describe the complexity of grapevine-associated microbiota using both culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches. The grape-associated microbial communities continuously change during the wine-making process, with different dominances that correspond to the main biotechnological steps that take place in wine. In order to simplify, following a time trend, four major dominances can be mainly considered: non-Saccharomyces, Saccharomyces, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and spoilage microbes. The first two dominances come in succession during the alcoholic fermentation: the impact of Saccharomyces (that are responsible of key enological step of ethanol production) can be complemented/integrated by the contributions of compatible non-Saccharomyces strains. Lactic acid bacteria constitute the malolactic consortium responsible of malolactic fermentation, a microbial bioconversion often desired in wine (especially in red wine production). Finally, the fourth dominance, the undesired microbiota, represents a panel of microorganisms that, coupling spoilage potential to the resistance to the harsh conditions typical of wine environment, can cause important economic losses. In each of these four dominances a complex microbial biodiversity has been described. The studies on the enological significance of the micro-biodiversity connected with each of the four dominances highlighted the presence of a dichotomy: in each consortia there are species/strains that, in reason of their metabolisms, are able to improve wine ‘qualities’ (resource of interest in starter cultures design), and species/strains that with their metabolism are responsible of depreciation of wine. Articles describing new oenological impacts of yeasts and bacteria belonging to the four main categories above mentioned (non-Saccharomyces, Saccharomycetes, lactic acid bacteria, and spoilage microbes) are welcome. Moreover, in this Research Topic, we encourage mini-review submissions on topics of immediate interest in wine microbiology that link microbial biodiversity with positive/negative effects in wine.

Ethos Priorat written by Elizabeth Hecker and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Farm life categories.

"'Ethos Priorat' is a detailed resource about the nature, spirit and wine of the DOQ Priorat, a tiny wine region in the mountains southwest of Barcelona. It was written, photographed and designed by Elizabeth Hecker. Over a span of 15 years, she spent time in the cellars and vineyards of each of the twelve viticultural areas of the region. Those experiences, the spirit of the people and memories shared by the elders inspired every part of the book. She consulted with experts in regional history, geology, viticulture and winemaking to provide information to support the Priorat’s powerfully evocative impressions. The story flows through the pages, illustrated with full-color photography, to bring readers inside the life of a Priorat wine. Chapter One, Nature, presents an in-depth look at the terroir of the Priorat, including climate, soil, biodiversity and the rhythm of life through the seasons. Chapter Two, Spirit, recounts history from the time of the Carthusian monks, who occupied the region from the 12th century through the revival that brought the region to the world stage in the year 2000. Over time the people have experienced both significant prosperity and great strife to form an enduring culture as pragmatic as it is able to dream. The final chapter, Wine, celebrates the acclaim the Priorat enjoys today. It takes readers on a sensory journey from the vineyards to the cellars as the fruit transforms into a wine."--

A regional guide to enotourism in Catalonia’s Costa Brava region including 59 wineries and 260 wines For most people visiting Catalonia and its capital, Barcelona, wine isn’t often the first thing on one’s mind. Most of us head to the beach, shop, imbibe, or meander about the ancient cities and villages that define this Catalan part of Spain. For those who make it up to the north, perhaps to visit the Dalí Museum in Figueres, you’ll find yourself in a whole different world from Barcelona. In the midst of the two Empordà counties, you’ll see vineyards spilling out across the plain and up the sides of the mountains. This enotourism guide gives you extensive profiles for 59 wineries in the region with their GPS coordinates, hundreds of full color photos, maps, and tasting notes for 260 wines.
