The King's Body offers a unique and up-to-date overview of a central theme in European history: the nature and meaning of the sacred rituals of kingship. Informed by the work of recent cultural anthropologists, Sergio Bertelli explores the cult of kingship, which pervaded the lives of hundreds of thousands of subjects, poor and rich, noble and cleric. His analysis takes in a wide spectrum, from the Vandal kings of Spain and the long-haired kings of France, to the beheaded kings of England and France, Charles I and Louis XVI. Bertelli explores the multiple meanings of the rites related to the king's body, from his birth (with the exhibition of his masculinity) to the crowning (a rebirth) to his death (a triumph and an apotheosis). We see how particular occasions such as entrances, processions, and banquets make sense only as they related directly to the king's body. This volume continues some of the issues raised in Volume 2 and fo cuses more closely on therapeutic intervention. The theoretical discus sion of aggression provides a background for the presentation of pat terns of aggression and violence affecting women, as well as possible connections between physical and emotional symptoms and indirect expressions of aggression. The section on aggression against and by women is an extension of some of the content of The Woman Patient, Volume 1 (e. g. , the chapter on rape). Theoretical and clinical views that are not often linked in this fashion are included here because we are interested in understanding the development of a self-concept that incorporates the constructive aspects of "aggression" as well as an un derstanding of violence. In this context, loss, abandonment, delin quency, and child and adolescent suicide are also extensions of these issues. The chapters that follow address aspects of symptom formation and concepts of illness. There is, as yet, no definitive explanation for why women experience certain illness patterns more or less than men. Current considerations have been reviewed, but these do not answer. They are a beginning on which we must build. It is apparent that any discussion of these subjects better elucidates the complexity if it in cludes an intermingling of general problems with concrete symptoms. Those specific problems that are usually thought of as psychological such as depression, and behaviors (such as substance abuse) provide a focus for understanding wider issues.

This collection is the first on ex-extremists and combatants (Formers) in violence prevention work. While the engagement of Formers in violence prevention programs--especially in the context of countering and preventing violent extremism (P/CVE), and peacebuilding--has expanded across the world, their involvement has been controversial and contested. This volume captures a variety of work Formers are engaged in across a range of contexts, broadly divided into three themes on their effectiveness, ethical considerations, and implementation. Written by a range of authors with diverse perspectives including academics, former extremists, peer mentors, program leaders, and practicing psychologists, chapters include Formers in North American research, the role of former Northern Irish combatants in peacebuilding, collaborating with Formers, the ethical imperatives of engaging Formers in P/CVE efforts, and more.
