Ce volume correspond au premier grand volet d'une action consacrée à la double question de la Violence et de l'identité. Le rapprochement de ces deux termes fait apparaître une problématique qui propose dans le domaine des sciences humaines un objet anthropologique riche de sens et qui intéresse à la fois des spécialistes de la littérature, des arts et de la langue, des sociologues, des historiens, des philosophes, des psychologues et des spécialistes de la rhétorique et de la communication. L'interaction de ces deux notions contient de multiples enjeux : philosophiques, psychologiques et sociologiques, idéologiques, politiques et institutionnels, esthétiques enfin. Le présent volume interroge toutes les dimensions de l'écriture violente et pas seulement au niveau de ses effets, il examine la tension de l'écriture de la violence entre exhiber et cacher, entre voiler et dénuder, il soulève plusieurs enjeux et de multiples questions. Les rapports violence et identité posent inévitablement des problèmes de rhétorique qui nous conduisent à nous interroger sur le discours de la violence, sur la construction d'une rhétorique et en même temps sur les limites de cette rhétorique. En même temps comment ne pas ressentir la rhétorique comme un piège, un écran à la sincérité ? Comment ne pas espérer revenir à un état brut, simple de la langue, sans contour et sans artifice ? La rhétorique, dans ces divers textes, on le verra, est rarement une fin en soi. Le discours ou le récit sont un moyen de communiquer la vérité subjective d'une expérience traumatique, sont un moyen de représenter le sujet victime de la violence dans son rapport avec l'Autre, visent à impliquer le lecteur en le dotant des éléments nécessaires pour voir, imaginer et penser la violence, fût-ce dans la déchirure de la représentation. Interroger ce discours c'est donc interroger aussi la violence dans ses fondements ontologiques. Se pencher sur la problématique « violence et écriture », c'est inévitablement s'interroger sur la violence comme mise en demeure de la langue.

Quand la folie parle presents a timely reinvigoration of the complex subject of madness and its literary manifestations. This stimulating study, authored by a range of young and talented international scholars, is of key importance in defining and refining our ongoing endeavours to theorise and analyse the literary representations of the problematics of mental health. By including discussions of texts that speak of madness as well as those that speak from madness, this volume demonstrates that, in fact, the non-sense of madness achieves a force of expression often more powerful than the usual order of logic. Embracing the scientific, the religious, the medical, the psychoanalytic, the historical, the erotic, and, of course, the properly literary, this wide-ranging, historically-informed collection is particularly significant in its exploration of both the “madwoman” and the “madman,” and exhibits an inclusiveness which extends to the genres and modes of the texts examined. The authors discussed, from Nerval and Houellebecq to NDiaye and Lê, provide a refreshingly “balanced” picture of mental illness, presenting madness or depression as a contestatory, creative stance against often mind-numbing social, racial or consumerist conventions, while refusing to play down the inevitable difficulties accompanying this isolating condition. The “dialectic effect” referenced in the title of the collection extends not only to the dynamics at work within the volume itself, as the different contributions implicitly dialogue with one another, but equally to the reader of these essays, who is engaged throughout in the debates put forward.

The notion of crime crosses generic, disciplinary and cultural frontiers. In an era of identity fraud, eco-crime and global terrorism, this collection moves towards a reconsideration of crime in the French and Francophone literary and cultural imagination. How have our conceptions of 'criminal' behaviour developed? How has the French genre of crime fiction, encompassing, but not limited to, the polar, the roman policier and film noir, evolved and reinvented itself? The volume adopts a number of theoretical approaches, which range from sociological and criminological discourse to literary criticism and postcolonial theory (by Chamoiseau, Durkheim, Deleuze, Foucault, Glissant, Krafft-Ebing and Todorov). In a wide-ranging series of innovative and challenging readings, it examines ideas which include the evolving concept of crime in literature from Voltaire and censorship through to scientific constructions of criminality in the nineteenth century and in the postcolonial era, both within and outside metropolitan France.
