The Control of Violence in Modern Society, starts from the hypothesis that in modern society we will face an increasing loss of control over certain phenomena of violence. This leads to unpredictable escalations and violence can no longer be contained adequately by the relevant control regimes, such as police, state surveillance institutions, national repression apparatuses and international law. However, before investigating this hypothesis from an internationally and historically comparative perspective, the terms and "tools" for this undertaking have to be rendered more precisely. Since both "control" and "violence" are all but clear-cut terms but rather highly debatable and contested concepts that may take multiple connotations. The main question is whether an increase in certain forms of violence can be explained by the failure or, in turn, "overeffectiveness" of certain control mechanisms. It is asked, for instance, which contribution religion can make to limit violence and, in turn, which destructive potential religion might have in its fundamentalist form. Moreover, the concept of individual self-control as well as social institutions and strategies of collective disengagement and de-radicalization are investigated with regard to their potential for controlling violence. The Control of Violence in Modern Society concludes with a re-examination of the hypothesis of a loss of control by specifying in what cases and under which circumstances we can speak of a loss of control over violence.

Carefully organized and tightly edited, this insightful book considers potential causes of men′s violence against women, utilizing a variety of theoretical perspectives. It summarizes what is known about the multiple causes of men′s violence against women and the importance of identifying men′s risk factors in order to prevent future violence. The editors′ approach is unique but systematic. In chapter 2, the editors present a preliminary multivariate model that explains men′s violence against women by identifying four content areas: macrosocietal, biological, gender role socialization, and relation factors. Within these four areas, the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men′s violence against women. In the subsequent chapters the contributing authors critique or react to specific parts of the multivariate model and address one or more of the 13 hypotheses in the presentation of their own ideas about the causes of men′s violence against women. In the concluding chapter, the editors summarize the contributors′ reactions to the original hypotheses by creating a revised multivariate model of risk factors for men′s violence against women. The final model includes biological, socialization, psychological, psychosocial, relational, and macrosocietal factors. "When and why do states implement international women's rights norms? Global Norms and Local Action is an examination of states' responses to violence against women (VAW) in Africa and their implementation of the international women's justice norm. Despite the presence of laws on various forms of VAW in most African countries, most victims face barriers to accessing justice through the criminal justice system. This problem is particularly acute in post-conflict countries. International organizations such as the United Nations, and women's rights advocates have, therefore, promoted the international women's justice norm, which emphasizes the establishment of specialized mechanisms within the criminal justice sector to address VAW. With a focus on the response of the police to rape and intimate partner violence in post-conflict Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, this book theorizes the United Nations' and women's movements' influence on the implementation of the international women's justice norm. It draws on over 300 interviews in both countries to demonstrate that strong international and domestic pressures, combined with favourable political and institutional conditions, are key to the rapid establishment of specialized mechanisms within the police force and to how police officers respond to rape and intimate partner violence cases. It argues that despite significant weaknesses, specialized mechanisms have improved women's access to justice. The book concludes with suggestions for how domestic and international human rights organizations, policymakers, and women's rights advocates can contribute to a holistic approach to addressing VAW"--
