Violence is not a concept one associates with nursing. Nevertheless, violence against nurses and by nurses in a variety of work settings has become an international problem. The exploration of this problem is at different stages in different countries. In some areas research has done much to identify and describe the factors in the victim, perpetrators and situations which lead to violence. In others research on this topic is still in its infancy. Similarly in some countries prevention and containment strategies in some areas of practice have seen substantial development over the last decade, while in other settings of countries, very little has been done. Because nursing represents the most extensive portion of healthcare workers in the United States, nurses are disproportionately vulnerable to violence attributable to patients. Patient violence is an endemic occupational hazard with significant effects on nurses, patient care, and organizational performance. Nurses working in unsafe may encounter physical injuries, sexual assaults, and verbal abuse, increasing the risk of developing emotional distress and psychiatric disorders. Patient violence is also a precursor to suboptimal staff productivity, job dissatisfaction, and high employee turnover. It hinders effective nurse-patient relationships, reducing the quality of therapeutic communication. The overall effect of patient violence has consequential implications to the nursing profession, patient care, and workplace safety, highlighting the need for comprehensive measures to subdue violence incidence in healthcare settings. Although the American Nurses Association (ANA) advocates for zero-tolerance of "incivility, bullying, and workplace violence," inadequate incidence reporting mechanisms limit the ability to nurture staff safety. Some staff members may dismiss covert and overt aggressiveness attributable to patients with problematic behaviors and, unfortunately, propagate unsafe working situations. Thus, effective incidence reporting policies are instrumental in promoting mitigating violent encounters from patients or their family members.

Health personnel, especially nurses, are often victims of workplace violence. Unfortunately, little is known about the nurses' experience of violence. This research was undertaken to explore accounts of workplace violence so as to make the dimensions of the nurses' experience visible and more fully understood. In this study, the nurses' experience of workplace violence emerged as a highly complex entity, deeply embedded in relationships and context. How nurses' perceive the contextual factors of the organization, their immediate work environment and their individual attributes were found to play a significant role in how they respond to the phenomenon. This research demonstrates a need to re-think how we address workplace violence in nursing, including organizational policy, governing structures, culture and climate of practice environments and the role education programs have in preparing nurses to manage this difficult problem.
