Been A Heavy Life written by Lois Presser and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-01 with Social Science categories.

In this groundbreaking work, Lois Presser investigates the life stories of men who have perpetrated violence. She applies insights from across the academy to in-depth interviews with men who shared their accounts of how they became the people we most fear--those who rape, murder, assault, and rob, often repeatedly. Been a Heavy Life provides the discipline of criminology with two crucial frameworks: one for critically evaluating the construction of offenders’ own stories, and one for grasping the cultural meta-narratives that legitimize violence. For social scientists generally, this book offers a vivid demonstration of just how dynamic and contingent self-narratives are.

Fighting For My Life written by J. J. Joseph and has been published by ReadHowYouWant.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05 with Family & Relationships categories.

In 2006, J J Joseph was convicted of a shocking assault on his wife. He was sentenced to home detention, with the real possibility that he would never see her or his children again. Full of remorse, Joseph accepted his punishment, worked through counselling and anger management courses and fought to see his family again. During this period he took a good hard look at his life: at his violent upbringing dominated by a father whose fists were his first resort, at his hostile relationship with his mother (also a victim of violence), at the heartbreaking suicide of his younger brother, at his father's shocking murder, at his drug abuse and womanising. He was forced to see what other people saw: a frightening and violent man whose actions were unpredictable. It was then that he understood, for the first time, what his wife had to put up with and why she was sometimes reticent and withdrawn. Finally it was his love for her and his devotion to his children that pulled him through. Drug- and alcohol-free, and determined to change his life, Joseph has now been accepted back into the heart of his family. In Fighting for my Life, Joseph talks openly about his family background and life experiences, and is unusually honest in describing his feelings. This book played a major part in bringing his wife and his mother back to him again, when they read and grasped the truth about Joseph. Written with passion and searing honesty, Fighting for My Life will open your eyes, and fill you with compassion and hope.

The Life Course Of Serious And Violent Youth Grown Up written by Evan C. McCuish and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-30 with Psychology categories.

The Life-Course of Serious and Violent Youth Grown Up addresses significant gaps in the literature on youth involved in chronic, serious, and violent offending. Through longitudinal research and a long follow-up into adulthood, it challenges common perceptions about offending outcomes. Using theoretically grounded, methodologically sophisticated and empirically driven research, this book culminates 20 years of data emerging from the Incarcerated Serious and Violent Young Offender Study (ISVYOS). Initiated in 1998 to understand the origins of serious and violent youth offending, it follows 1,719 formerly incarcerated youth through adulthood and offers a contemporary perspective to questions about chronic offending in adolescence and social and offending outcomes in adulthood. The authors provide a theoretically framed examination of new findings from the ISVYOS regarding participants’ justice system involvement, from onset to persistence to desistance. Most participants experienced continued involvement in the justice system in adulthood. However, contrary to past literature, ISVYOS findings challenge static descriptions of chronic offending and notions of the youth "super predator". ISVYOS findings also challenge assertions that experiences and risk factors in childhood and adolescence are not informative of adult justice system involvement. Together, the findings call for a more humanistic approach that recognizes that the complex lives of individuals formerly incarcerated in adolescence implies that desistance does not happen by default. This book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and students of forensic psychology, developmental and life course criminology, youth justice, and violent crime.

BE THE FIRST TO READ DAVID WILSON'S NEW TRUE CRIME BOOK "A PLOT TO KILL" BY PRE-ORDERING NOW 'Hugely insightful and thought provoking . . . I read it from cover to cover in one go' - Emilia Fox 'With characteristic brilliance and admirable sensitivity, Wilson illuminates the complex causes of their often horrific crimes' - Professor Simon Winlow, Vice President of the British Society of Criminology Professor David Wilson has spent his professional life working with violent men - especially men who have committed murder. Aged twenty-nine he became, at that time, the UK's youngest ever prison Governor in charge of a jail and his career since then has seen him sat across a table with all sorts of killers: sometimes in a tense interview; sometimes sharing a cup of tea (or something a little stronger); sometimes looking them in the eye to tell them that they are a psychopath. Some of these men became David's friends; others would still love to kill him. My Life with Murderers tells the story of David's journey from idealistic prison governor to expert criminologist and professor. With experience unlike any other, David's story is a fascinating and compelling study of human nature.
