Four decades ago, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus was discovered, at about the same time and independently, in 3 different localities in the U.S.A. Armstrong and Lillie encountered the agent in a monkey when they passaged a recent isolate of the St. Louis encephalitis virus; Rivers and Scott isolated 5 strains from patients with meningitis; and Traub revealed the virus in a colony of albino mice. Already in these first isolations mice were incriminated, and later observa tions proved beyond doubt that M. musculus is the principal reservoir of the virus in nature. For some time LCM virus was regarded as the sole etiologic agent of Wallgren's "meningite aseptique aigue". Soon, however, it became clear that Wallgren's syndrome had a multitude of causes, among which the LCM virus was of little relevance, and in subsequent years it disappeared from the sight of most viro logists. Indeed, it might have fallen into oblivion had it not been for Erich Traub who, practically all by himself, continued to investigate the intricate relationship between this virus and its natural host, the common house mouse.

Plant genetic engineering has revolutionized our ability to produce genetically improved plant varieties. A large portion of our major crops have undergone genetic improvement through the use of recombinant DNA techniques in which microorganisms play a vital role. The cross-kingdom transfer of genes to incorporate novel phenotypes into plants has utilized microbes at every step-from cloning and characterization of a gene to the production of a genetically engineered plant. This book covers the important aspects of Microbial Biotechnology in Agriculture and Aquaculture with and aim to improve crop yield.

Introduction to Modern Virology, an established student text for over 25 years, has been fully revised and updated in this fifth edition. Providing an integrated account of animal, plant and bacterial viruses, this book covers the field of virology from molecular biology to disease processes. Topics include the molecular aspects of virion structure, virus entry, replication and gene expression of RNA and DNA viruses and the classic paradigm of lysogeny, whilst on the biomedical side, chapters deal with virus cultivation, immunology and carcinogenesis. Uniquely, human and animal virus diseases are dealt with generically within the text, bringing all infections within a highly manageable seven-section framework. Prevention and therapy, evolution and emerging viruses receive particular attention and specific chapters address the major infectious challenges posed by HIV, pandemic influenza and BSE. This highly accessible new edition provides ideal reading for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of biology and medicine wishing to study virology.

With the vast developments in the virology field in the past three decades it is a challenge to keep abreast of new developments. While the specialist literature has grown at a rapid pace, books for students have not kept pace. As a result, the field has lacked a modern primer for some time. Basic Virology is for instructors everywhere who need an engaging and concise introduction to this challenging subject. For students, Basic Virology provides an accessible synthesis to those who need to master the fundamentals of virology. The basic concepts of molecular biology and immunology are carefully addressed and molecular detail increases as the book progresses. This unique organization will lend itself to many syllabi. Strong pedagogy makes this complex subject more comprehensible. Combined presentation of viral families and viral functions satisfies the needs of instructors with either approach. Reinforcement material – students will quickly achieve understanding of basic skills in molecular biology, and rudimentary aspects of immunology, pathology & disease.
