"Using an historical approach, Virtue's Own Feature explores nine of Shakespeare's most successful works as representations of the passions, virtues, and vices as they are complexly and extensively set out by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas." "The work first undertakes to describe the late Elizabethan poetic of Sir Philip Sidney, which is demonstrated to be Shakespeare's poetic as well. Second, this study explores Shakespeare's plays in relation to the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition of moral philosophy, one important branch of a major sixteenth-century philosophical tradition."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The characteristic feature of the Christian moral life remains the very person of Jesus Christ. As the Eternal Word of the Father, Christ supplies the universal, personal, and concrete norm for all moral comportment. When human action flows from the agent's union with Christ, human freedom meets up with its own graced source of energy. From the moment that a human creature encounters the triune God, the creature discovers who he is: For when God chooses a person to share in the blessed communion of his own life, the individual achieves a quality of personal being that only God can bestow. The more authentic our relationship with the Persons of the blessed Trinity becomes, the more the divine life takes hold of us and, through the virtues, shapes our daily actions. This new book treats the virtues of the Christian life from a Trinitarian perspective. The chapters pursue a common theme: To show believers how they can decide what is morally good and, by embracing the moral good, grow to the full statue of Christ's own loving kindness. To achieve this aim, the text treats in an innovative and fresh manner both the theological virtues, faith, hope, and charity, as well as the cardinal moral virtues, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The author also reflects on allied questions of moral theology and so provides a significant commentary on the third part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Achievement written by Gwen Bradford and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-08 with Philosophy categories.

From the magisterial to the mundane, achievements play a role in the best kind of human life, and many people think that they are of such importance that they are worth pursuing at the expense of serious sacrifices. Yet for all that, no philosophers have devoted more than a few short passages to discerning what makes achievements valuable, or even what makes something an achievement to begin with. Gwen Bradford presents the first systematic account of what achievements are, and what it is about them that makes them worth doing. It turns out that more things count as achievements than we might have thought, and that what makes them valuable isn't something we usually think of as good. It turns out that difficulty, perhaps surprisingly, plays a central part in characterizing achievements and their value: achievements are worth the effort. But just what does it mean for something to be difficult, and why is it valuable? A thorough analysis of the nature of difficulty is given, and ultimately, the best account of the value of achievements taps into perfectionist axiology. But not just any perfectionist theory of value will do, and in this book we see a new perfectionist theory developed that succeeds in capturing the value of achievement better than its predecessors.

This book brings together a sensitive understanding of love and an unusually careful, even painstaking, analysis of the enormous but often neglected role of morality and the virtues in love. Martin's discussions of such virtues as caring, courage, fidelity, and honesty are superb, the examples well-chosen, the argument personal but nevertheless rigorous, the prose accessible and enjoyable to read.

Burdened Virtues written by Lisa Tessman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-06 with Social Science categories.

Lisa Tessman's Burdened Virtues is a deeply original and provocative work that engages questions central to feminist theory and practice, from the perspective of Aristotelian ethics. Focused primarily on selves who endure and resist oppression, she addresses the ways in which devastating conditions confronted by these selves both limit and burden their moral goodness, and affect their possibilities of flourishing. She describes two different forms of "moral trouble" prevalent under oppression. The first is that the oppressed self may be morally damaged, prevented from developing or exercising some of the virtues; the second is that the very conditions of oppression require the oppressed to develop a set of virtues that carry a moral cost to those who practice them--traits that Tessman refers to as "burdened virtues." These virtues have the unusual feature of being disjoined from their bearer's own well being. Tessman's work focuses on issues that have been missed by many feminist moral theories, and her use of the virtue ethics framework brings feminist concerns more closely into contact with mainstream ethical theory. This book will appeal to feminist theorists in philosophy and women's studies, but also more broadly, ethicists and social theorists.

The Handbook Of Virtue Ethics written by Stan van Hooft and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-11 with Philosophy categories.

Virtue ethics has emerged as a distinct field within moral theory - whether as an alternative account of right action or as a conception of normativity which departs entirely from the obligatoriness of morality - and has proved itself invaluable to many aspects of contemporary applied ethics. Virtue ethics now flourishes in philosophy, sociology and theology and its applications extend to law, politics and bioethics. "The Handbook of Virtue Ethics" brings together leading international scholars to provide an overview of the field. Each chapter summarizes and assesses the most important work on a particular topic and sets this work in the context of historical developments. Taking a global approach by embracing a variety of major cultural traditions along with the Western, the "Handbook" maps the emergence of virtue ethics and provides a framework for future developments.

Virtue ethics has attracted a lot of attention over the past few decades, and more recently there has been considerable interest in virtue epistemology as an alternative to traditional approaches in that field. Ironically, although virtue epistemology got its inspiration from virtue ethics, this is the first book that brings virtue epistemologists and virtue ethicists together to contribute their particular expertise, and the first that is devoted to the topic of intellectual virtue. All new and right up to date, the papers collected here by Zagzebski and DePaul demonstrate the benefit of each branch of philosophy to the other. Intellectual Virtue will be required reading for anyone working in either field.
