Agriculture and Industry in Brazil is a study of the economics of Brazilian agriculture and industry, with a special focus on the importance of innovation to productivity growth. Albert Fishlow and José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho examine technological change in Brazil, highlighting the role of public policy in building institutions and creating an innovation-oriented environment. This book explores the agrifood system transitions in Brazil to provide a new understanding of the trajectory of agriculture and rural development in this country. It accentuates the increasing diversifi cation and hybridization of food production and consumption practices throughout history. With a framework that combines convention theory, neoinstitutional approaches and practice theory, this book suggests the concept of “food orders” which represents different arrangements of practices, institutions and sociotechnical artifacts. By exploring the interrelations between these elements, the book looks at six different food orders: industrial, commercial, domestic, aesthetic, civic and fi nancial, in tandem with examples of practices, sectors and territories to understand the dynamics of each one. This aids in understanding the main tendencies of the agrifood sector in such a vast country that, being a major player in global food markets, also affect production and consumption dynamics in several other countries. Besides, this book also seeks to comprehend the current institutional changes in Brazil that may be critical to interpret the global dissemination of populist and autocratic governments. Offering key insights into the contemporary sociology of agriculture and food, this book demonstrates how strengthening democracy and supporting the organization of civil society are major challenges when we think about transition for sustainable food systems.

A ideia de escrever este livro surgiu ainda em 2020, diante dos números expressivos que eram atribuídos ao desempenho do agronegócio brasileiro e que alavancavam uma economia atingida pela pandemia da COVID-19. Tal desempenho foi fruto de uma safra recorde de grãos e de um excelente desempenho da pecuária, o que gerou saldo positivo na balança comercial, propiciando a criação de mais empregos e renda. Igualmente motivou os autores a celebração dos trinta anos da Lei nº 8.171, de 17 de janeiro de 1991, que instituiu a Política Agrícola no Brasil. Uma data que não poderia passar em branco, uma vez que essa lei, inovadora para a época, foi importante não só por organizar o setor, mas por buscar consolidar, em um único instrumento, regras importantes como as relacionadas a produção, crédito, tecnologia e sustentabilidade. A partir dessa lei, assim como as relacionadas, que se seguiram, o país seguiu uma trajetória sem volta, de um crescimento econômico baseado na sustentabilidade. Buscamos, neste livro, demonstrar isso: que somos uma potência agroambiental. Como prefaciante, convidamos o Professor Roberto Rodrigues, ex-Ministro da Agricultura e Coordenador da FGV Agro, que nos brindou com um texto vigoroso e muito rico em informações, fornecendo uma visão geral e detalhada de uma atividade agropecuária tropical sustentável, a qual, conforme ressaltado, “deverá colocar o Brasil na posição de campeão mundial da segurança alimentar”.
