Uncertain Regional Urbanism in Venezuela explores the changes cities face when they become metropolises, forming expanding regions which create both potential and problems within settlements. Crime and violence soared in twenty-first-century Venezuela even as poverty and inequality decreased, contradicting the conventional wisdom that these are the underlying causes of violence. The Paradox of Violence in Venezuela explains the rise of violence under both Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro—leftist presidents who made considerable investment in social programs and political inclusion. Contributors argue that violence arose not from the frustration of inequality, or the needs created by poverty, but rather from the interrelated factors of a particular type of revolutionary governance, extraordinary oil revenues, a reliance on militarized policing, and the persistence of concentrated disadvantage. These factors led to dramatic but unequal economic growth, massive institutional and social change, and dysfunctional criminal justice policies that destabilized illicit markets and social networks, leading to an increase in violent conflict resolution. En este trabajo se presentan de la manera más sistemática y completa posible, las dos visiones de nuestra sociedad que hoy se hallan en colisión. Por una parte, la "Visión neocomunista", que pretende enmarcar el relato de la patria mítica y de la emancipación en la interpretación marxista de la historia como lucha de clases, con el fin de alcanzar la utopía de la sociedad de iguales. Por la otra, la "Visión creadora", que propone nuestra conversión en una sociedad libre y plural orientada a la realización de los derechos humanos y al despliegue del potencial creador de las personas. Cuál de estas dos visiones habrá de predominar en el sentir y en el pensar de los venezolanos, es el tema fundamental de nuestro tiempo. Es bueno advertir que la distinción entre una "Visión neocomunista" y una "Visión creadora" no se corresponde con la distinción entre el chamado chavismo y la oposición democrática. Sostenemos que la visión neocomunista es defendida solo por un sector del chavismo como por prácticamente la totalidad de la oposición. El desafío que los venezolanos enfrentamos es recrear nuestra comunidad política para poder enrumbarnos hacia un futuro de paz, libertad y bienestar. Quizás la "Visión creadora" pueda servir a ese propósito.
