(See also our publication 'Kawase Hasui The complete woodblock prints', 2003). Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) is considered one of the most important Japanese landscape artists of the 20th century. His prints, produced under the guidance and stern eye of his publisher, Watanabe Shôzaburô, are the modern continuation of the unforgettable works by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the 19th-century masters of this genre. As none other, he could evoke Japan of the eventful interwar period. Hasui's work enjoyed huge popularity from his very first print of 1918. In contrast to his illustrious 19th-century predecessors, his work was immediately successful in the rest of the world. His publisher, Watanabe Shôzaburô, recognised the enormous potential of the American market, which resulted in Hasui's prints fetching high prices at auctions in New York as early as the 1920s. After the Second World War, his prints were highly desired and sought after collectible items among the American occupying forces in Japan. Hasui's work has always been greatly appreciated in Japan: He was acknowledged as a 'Living National Treasure' in 1956.

With Hokusai, Utamaro and Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is one of the great protagonists of ukiyo-e . With respect to Hokusai, whom he constantly compared himself to, since he was around thirty years younger, Hiroshige made landscape and nature the focus of his work by instilling in the viewer a sense of harmony, serenity and peace that, still today, is universally admired. In fact, thanks to these qualities he is one of the most praised artists and is considered the "master of nature". Hiroshige renders the human figure with quick, direct lines that at times call to mind manga and anime sketches, though simplified and essential. In 1573, the Tokugawa Shogunate came to power and banished foreigners from Japan. In this study, Aaron Gerow focuses on the early period in which the institutional and narrational structure of Japanese cinema was in flux, arguing that the transnational intertext is less important than the power-laden operations by which the meaning of cinema itself was discursively defined. Both progressive critics of the 'pure film' movement and the more conservative Japanese cultural bureaucrats demanded a unitary text that suppressed the hybrid and unpredictable meanings attendant on early Japanese cinema's informal exhibition contexts. Gerow points out the irony that the progressive and individualist pure film movement critics worked in concert with the Japanese state to undo the 'theft' of Japanese cinema, proposing to replace representations of Japan in Western films by exporting a Japanese cinema 'reformed' to emulate the international norm.
