Visions of Savage Paradise is the first major book-length study of seventeenth-century Dutch artist Albert Eckhout to be published in nearly seventy years. Eckhout, who was court painter to the colonial governor of Dutch Brazil, created life-size paintings of Amerindians, Africans, and Brazilians of mixed race in support of the governor’s project to document the people and natural history of the colony. In this study, Rebecca Parker Brienen provides a detailed analysis of Eckhout’s works, framing them with discussions of both their colonial context and contemporary artistic practices in the Dutch republic.

From the sex-free paradise of the Shakers to the worker's paradise of Marx, utopian ideas seem to have two things in common--they all are wonderfully plausible at the start and they all end up as disasters. In Visions of Utopia, three leading cultural critics--Edward Rothstein, Martin Marty, and Herbert Muschamp--look at the history of utopian thinking, exploring why they fail and why they are still worth pursuing. Edward Rothstein, New York Times cultural critic, contends that every utopia is really a dystopia--a disaster in the making--one that overlooks the nature of humanity and the impossibilities of paradise. He traces the ideal in politics and technology and suggests that only in art--and especially in music--does the desire for utopia find satisfaction. Martin Marty examines several models of utopia--from Thomas More's to a 1960s experimental city that he helped to plan--to show that, even though utopias can never be realized, we should not be too quick to condemn them. They can express dimensions of the human spirit that might otherwise be stifled and can plant ideas that may germinate in more realistic and practical soil. And Herbert Muschamp, the New York Times architectural critic, looks at Utopianism as exemplified in two different ways: the Buddhist tradition and the work of visionary Viennese architect Adolph Loos. Utopian thinking embodies humanity's noblest impulses, yet it can lead to horrors such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Regime. In Visions of Utopia, these leading thinkers offer an intriguing look at the paradoxes of paradise.

Visions Of Heaven written by Martin Kemp and has been published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03 with Art categories.
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is one of the greatest European writers, whose untrammelled imaginative capacity was matched by a huge base in embracing the science of his era. His texts also paint compelling visual images. In Visions of Heaven, renowned scholar Martin Kemp investigates Dante's supreme vision of divine light and its implications for the visual artists who were the inheritors of Dante's vision. The whole book may be regarded as a new Paragone (comparison), the debate that began in the Renaissance about which of the arts is superior. Dante's ravishing accounts of divine light set painters the severest challenge, which took them centuries to meet. A major theme running through Dante's Divine Comedy, particularly in its third book, the Paradiso, centres on Dante's acts of seeing (conducted according to optical rules with respect to the kind of visual experience that can be accomplished on earth) and the overwhelming of Dante's earthly senses by heavenly light, which does not obey his rules of earthly optics. The repeated blinding of Dante by excessive light sets the tone for artists' portrayal of unseeable brightness.

Celestial Thrones written by Theresa Walton and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-27 with Religion categories.
Celestial Thrones explores how cultures throughout history have envisioned celestial realms as seats of power, influencing societies and reflecting humanity's deepest aspirations. Diving into the intersection of religion, history, and art, the book examines divine authority manifested in heavenly settings. From architectural depictions to theological underpinnings, it questions why many traditions envision deities in majestic locations. These visions reveal much about the desire for order and transcendence. The book traces the evolution of celestial imagery across eras and cultures, referencing Mesopotamian ziggurats and medieval Christian art. It argues that celestial thrones and kingdoms, whether literal or symbolic, mirror earthly power dynamics and societal ideals. Structured to guide readers, Celestial Thrones introduces the concept of celestial kingdoms and their significance. It analyzes examples such as Greek palaces, Buddhist Pure Lands, and the Garden of Eden, culminating in how these models influenced earthly governance and individual behavior.
