Visit Me In California written by Cooley Windsor and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-13 with Fiction categories.

Deftly moving between the comic and the tragic, the sacred and the profane, this collection of short stories is populated by modern children, ancient poets, dying men, and your basic, mundane Greek gods. Windsor turns familiar stories from the Bible and from myth inside out, exploring the feelings of minor characters and looking at events from imaginative perspectives. His prose is rich with detail and emotion and he touches on themes of art and artifice, success and failure, family and its sacrifices, and expectations met or missed. In “The Last Israelite in the Red Sea,” a follower of Moses who dallies during their Exodus finds it more difficult to walk across the bottom of the temporarily displaced Red Sea without shoes. “Four of the Times My Sister Cried” follows a young narrator as his family rehearses for his mother’s death and then, as they must, lives without her. The wry “The Art of War” has characters from Homer to a courtesan talking shop about the battle of Troy from their perspectives. Set as a series of short pieces, “The Fleshly School of Poetry” tells of lessons learned and lessons taught. With its explorations of expectations, “Meet the Author” gives readers intimate portraits of various plans or coping mechanisms people put up when death draws close. “The End of the World” approaches the Rapture with a humorously practical spin: wouldn’t the angels need a plan to ensure that it goes smoothly? “In Parting” explores some of the troubles with family, especially when a sister’s child turns out to be a marionette. The geographically explicit “Three Mediums in San Francisco” touches on frustrated and imagined eroticism. The collection ends with “The Hilton Epiphany,” a fitting closer in which divinity comes to an unlikely person in an unlikely place.

'Poignant, funny and highly readable. Would make a wonderful present.' Sue Leonard, Examiner 'A real snapshot in time ... a celebration of female friendship ... fantastic - such a good read' Irish Times Women's Podcast 'Engaging ... tender and true and spiced with wit and no little wisdom' RTE Guide 'Heart-warming ... nostalgic ... the letters brim over with the kind of humour and honest reflection that only best friends exchange' Irish Independent 'I highly recommend this unusual and fantastic book. It's a great trip down memory lane.' Librarian Lavender 'Isn't it great, Cathy, being where we are (age-wise I mean)? I really enjoy being 18 cos you have a degree of independence and yet you can act the gom if you want cos we're not "all growed up" yet.' 'I don't know if I agree about it being great being 18. I'm kinda apprehensive, waiting for "it all" to come. I think 22-23'd be better. Then you'd be sophisticated and knowledgeable ...' It's the era of Dynasty, Murphy's Micro Quiz-M and MT-USA on the telly, Kajagoogoo, Culture Club and Chris de Burgh in the charts. And also a time of mass emigration and creeping social change. In 1983 in Carrick-on-Suir two 18-year-olds take tentative steps into the future: Cathy to become an au pair, Mary to study accountancy. For a year they exchange long gossipy letters. The letters are touching, funny, tender and gutsy. They show the girls' growing pains as they make sense of their new lives, dream about finding love, and start to realise that the world is a more complex and challenging place than they had ever imagined. Most of all, Cathy and Mary's letters are filled with the eternal optimism and sense of wonderment of youth.

ABOUT THIS BOOK Thriller doesn't describe it! People live all sorts of lives but few as exciting as portrayed here. The author's short stories go from entertaining murderers and gang members to scary dating moments with a potential rapist; only to find love with someone she met 300 years prior. Sharing her work as a psychiatric social worker gives us many real life experiences one can only hope to avoid in one's own life. Yet some situations are encouraging as she helps others survive. The details of her descriptions are amazing as she paints us pictures so vivid we can shut our eyes and see the little gray sausage-like curls and round steel framed glasses on Mrs. Waddell. Whoever wrote a poem about MY ZIT? Different times in history are clearly described from when the little lady of the plantation threw the Yankee soldier over the fence to land in a mud puddle surrounded by snorting pigs. What does one do when facing the jagged glass ends of a broken beer bottle handled by a furious man 6'3" tall? Who ever dared to foster a former heroin pusher? Does anyone in your family vividly remember the details about our perspective of WWII? The author lived in the only city in the U.S. that housed an active army Overseas Replacement Depot. She even remembers the blue cellophane that covered the flashlights of the Air Raid Wardens. This writing covers: humor, adventure, religion, history, law, education, philosophy, psychology, parapsychology, parenting, drama, and much more. Call her crazy: call her eccentric. She lived, loved, DARED, and wrote to tell about it. You will enjoy plenty of laughs! R. Charles Guenther, retired school administrator

Nineteen-year-old Naomi Abram is lost at sea with her heart-throb, a Bible, and a notebook, and crash-lands on a beach, in the dark, in Puerto Rico. She boards the wrong plane for home, and unwittingly enters the U.S.A., where she lives an undocumented, stagnant lifestyle. Naomi is forced to lie about where she's from, in order to maintain employment; but her conscience keeps her moral values tame. She experiences horror, when her landlady dies; grief and guilt, when her brother dies; fright and fear, when confronted by law enforcement; and joy, when she sneaks out of the Country and visits her family. While in Antigua, she learns that a new culture, Rastafarianism, is sweeping the island. After waiting and hoping for more than a decade, Naomi's presence in the U.S.A. is finally documented.
