Les obres d’art han estat tradicionalment el resultat d’encàrrecs específics de clients i promotors. A Roma, a partir del segle XVII, es documenten les primeres exposicions públiques de pintures que mostren les capacitats dels artistes en actiu. Al segle XVIII, l’acadèmia organitza a París els Salons amb regularitat, que permeten els inicis de la crítica d’art. Caldrà esperar a la consolidació de la Revolució Industrial, cap a mitjan segle XIX, quan sorgeix la necessitat d’acostar art i indústria, per veure exposicions amb obres d’artistes i artesans ja desapareguts. Aquestes mostres, per distingir-se de les de belles arts o d’artistes vius, es van anomenar «exposicions retrospectives» des de la que es va celebrar a París el 1865 amb el títol Musée Rétrospectif, i que es va desplegar al magnífic Palais de l’Industrie (avui desaparegut). Aquest volum és el primer intent de fixar el nombre i de descriure el caràcter d’aquesta mena d’exposicions dins el nostre entorn cultural, des de la inicial, que es va fer a Barcelona el 1867, fins a la de l’art català medieval de París de 1937, promoguda per la Generalitat republicana. Aquest itinerari per les exposicions retrospectives es pot llegir, també, com un recorregut col·lectiu de descoberta del propi patrimoni artístic.
