Visual communication through graphical and sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds and cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, visual languages and multi-media processing. It has been successfully employed in knowledge discovery, end-user programming, modeling, rapid systems prototyping, education, and design activities by people of many disciplines including architects, artists, children, engineers, and scientists. In addition, visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and Web technology, and electronic mobile devices. This manuscript provides the cutting-edge techniques, approaches and the latest ongoing researches in the context of visual information communication. It is a collection of 24 chapters selected from more than 60 submissions to the VINCI'09 - 2009 Visual Information Communications International Conference, that is held in Sydney Australia, September 2009. These chapters were selected through a stringent review process to ensure their high standard in quality, significance and relevance. Each chapter was reviewed by at least two international Program Committee members of VINCI’09. The book covers a broad range of contents in five key sub-areas of visual information communication, including.

If you're aware of the tremendous improvements achieved in productivity and quality as a result of employee involvement, then you'll appreciate the great value of creating a visual factory. This book explains why conventional work areas, where fragmented information flows from "top to bottom," must be replaced by the "visual workplace," where information flows in every direction. It details how visual management can make the factory a place where workers and supervisors freely communicate so that every employee can take improvement action. The author's year-long worldwide research resulted in an abundance of practical recommendations. The communication techniques he suggests will: Foster cohesion within groups of employees. Turn fault-based into fact based communication. Overcome such problems as absenteeism and high defect rates. Stimulate an unending flow of suggestions from employees. A valuable resource for plant, operations, and human relations managers, this text discusses how successful companies develop meeting and communication areas, communicate work standard production controls such as kanban, and make goals and progress visible. Over 200 diagrams and photos illustrate the numerous visual techniques discussed.

A leading data visualization expert explores the negative—and positive—influences that charts have on our perception of truth. Today, public conversations are increasingly driven by numbers. While charts, infographics, and diagrams can make us smarter, they can also deceive—intentionally or unintentionally. To be informed citizens, we must all be able to decode and use the visual information that politicians, journalists, and even our employers present us with each day. Demystifying an essential new literacy for our data-driven world, How Charts Lie examines contemporary examples ranging from election result infographics to global GDP maps and box office record charts, as well as an updated afterword on the graphics of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Visual Information Processing documents the Proceedings of the Eighth Annual Carnegie Symposium on Cognition, held at the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 19, 1972. This book compiles papers on the results from ongoing, programmatic research projects that aim to develop information processing models of cognition. The role of visual processes in cognition and language comprehension and explicit computer simulation of the memory-scanning task are discussed in detail. Other topics include the chronometrie studies of the rotation of mental images; function of visual imagery in elementary mathematics; and semantic prerequisites for comprehension. The production system for counting, subitizing, and adding; visual processes in linguistic comprehension; and models of control structures are also deliberated. This publication is a good source for students and researchers interested in images.

This book offers a comprehensive and unbiased introduction to 3D Computer Vision, ranging from its foundations and essential principles to advanced methodologies and technologies. Divided into 11 chapters, it covers the main workflow of 3D computer vision as follows: camera imaging and calibration models; various modes and means of 3D image acquisition; binocular, trinocular and multi-ocular stereo vision matching techniques; monocular single-image and multi-image scene restoration methods; point cloud data processing and modeling; simultaneous location and mapping; generalized image and scene matching; and understanding spatial-temporal behavior. Each topic is addressed in a uniform manner: the dedicated chapter first covers the essential concepts and basic principles before presenting a selection of typical, specific methods and practical techniques. In turn, it introduces readers to the most important recent developments, especially in the last three years. This approachallows them to quickly familiarize themselves with the subject, implement the techniques discussed, and design or improve their own methods for specific applications. The book can be used as a textbook for graduate courses in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, data science, and related subjects. It also offers a valuable reference guide for researchers and practitioners alike.
