We are interested in studying the application of computer vision and visual clusters on creating both foreground and background objects. This is motivated by the observation that deep neural networks learn context as part of the objects. Therefore, by having a dictionary of parts for both foreground and background objects we can capture objects in occluded settings and separate the foreground from the background. Our work makes further contribution by having one network for both foreground and background objects rather than having multiple networks for multiple set of objects. We have demonstrated that a combination of the right network architecture and clustering algorithm can create visual concepts that can be used for both foreground and background objects.

Despite being the leading paradigm in computer vision, deep neural networks are inherently limited by the visual and semantic information contained in their training set. In this thesis, we aim to design deep models operating with previously unseen visual domains and semantic concepts. We first describe different solutions for generalizing to new visual domains, applying variants of normalization layers to multiple challenging settings e.g. where new domain data is not available but arrives online or is described by metadata. In the second part, we incorporate new semantic concepts into pretrained deep models. We propose specific solutions for different problems such as multi-task/incremental learning and open-world recognition. Finally, we merge the two challenges: given images of multiple domains and categories, can we recognize unseen concepts in unseen domains? We propose an approach that is the first, promising step, towards solving this problem. Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2020” arranged by Sapienza University Press.

Plant phenotyping (PP) describes the physiological and biochemical properties of plants affected by both genotypes and environments. It is an emerging research field that is assisting the breeding and cultivation of new crop varieties to be more productive and resilient to challenging environments. Precision agriculture (PA) uses sensing technologies to observe crops and then manage them optimally to ensure that they grow in healthy conditions, have maximum productivity, and have minimal negative effects on the environment. Traditionally, the observation of plant traits heavily relies on human experts which is labor intensive, time-consuming, and subjective. Automatic crop traits measurement in PP and PA are two different fields, but they share the same sensing and data processing technologies in many respects. Recently, driven by computer and sensor technologies, machine vision (MV) and machine learning (ML) have contributed to accurate, high-throughput, and nondestructive plant phenotyping and precision agriculture. However, these technologies are still in their infant stage and there are many challenges and questions related to them that still need to be addressed. The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a platform to share the latest research results on the application of MV and ML for PP and PA. It aims to highlight cutting-edge technologies, bottle-necks, and future research directions for MV and ML in crop breeding, crop cultivation, disease management, weed control, and pest control.

This book contains 17 papers presented at the conference devoted to cutting-edge technologies and concepts related to image processing. A broad collection of problems including man–machine interfaces, comparison of quantum and conventional computing in deep learning, medical image processing, image segmentation, face recognition, outdoor scene analysis, image rendering and colorization, map generation, traffic analysis, hardware acceleration, data association, and visual cryptography is investigated. Research on these issues is important, among others due to that large amounts of video data are collected continually. They can be easily stored, but their analysis is still a challenge. The book is primarily intended for researchers and practitioners in image analysis and generation, as well as for students in the fields related to computer science. However, any reader interested in the subject matter of the book will find some chapters interesting and valuable.
