A questa legge non sfuggirono Alessandro e Cesare, due condottieri che dominarono il mondo ma non le proprie passioni, ondeggiando fra sentimenti contrapposti, fra generosità e crudeltà, fra rispetto della tradizione e innovazione, e aspirando ad un potere assoluto, il primo per realizzare una monarchia universale capace di unire popoli diversi in un grande organismo multirazziale, il secondo per poter operare il riscatto politico, militare, intellettuale e morale della sua patria. «Come i pittori nell’eseguire un ritratto si curano principalmente del volto e dell’espressione degli occhi, da cui traspare la personalità, e pochissimo delle altre parti del corpo, così io preferisco interessarmi di più dei segni interiori e attraverso questi rappresentare la vita dei personaggi, lasciando ad altri il racconto delle grandi contese.» Plutarco nacque intorno al 46 d.C. a Cheronea, in Beozia, da famiglia ricca e di buona cultura. Recatosi ad Atene nel 60, fu discepolo di Ammonio, filosofo di origine egiziana, che lo introdusse alla filosofia di Platone, il cui influsso sarà sempre presente nella sua opera. Compì numerosi viaggi in Asia, in Egitto, ma soprattutto a Roma; morì nella sua città natale intorno al 120 d.C. Le opere pervenuteci, ordinate in un corpus in età bizantina, comprendono le Questioni conviviali, i Moralia, dialoghi e trattati, e le Vite parallele, la sua opera maggiore e più conosciuta. Di Plutarco la Newton Compton ha pubblicato anche le Vite parallele di Alessandro e Cesare.
