Emergency ophthalmology is an area full of pitfalls for the unwary primary care practitioner. Vitreoretinal disorders make up the majority of emergency sight-threatening conditions, and a wide and increasingly varied range of conditions of the eye present in primary care settings. Correct diagnosis at initial presentation, and appropriate and speedy referral, are extremely important. This book is therefore an essential reference for the primary care physician, who is often the first to see these patients and is in a position of responsibility for decision-making.

The management of major vitreoretinal diseases has changed dramatically since publication of the first edition in 1999. The field continues to evolve rapidly and is becoming an increasingly complex, multifaceted practice of medicine and surgery. As such, retinal specialists are faced with increasingly sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to learn and master. Contributors to this completely updated reference are renowned experts in retinal disease and vitreous disorders. Divided into four essential sections, the book starts with a basic overview of posterior segment anatomy and physiology. The second section reviews the spectrum of diagnostic tools used in the field from relatively low technology such as the indirect ophthalmoscope to the latest, state-of-the-art optical coherence tomography test. The third and most comprehensive section covers disease states, subdivided into eight categories: retinovascular conditions, macular diseases, inherited vitreoretinal conditions, inflammatory conditions, intraocular tumors, vitreous and retinal detachments, trauma and toxicity, and fundus conditions. The text concludes with specific vitreoretinal procedures. Key Features New technologies including spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), intravitreal injections, and microincisional vitrectomy The utilization of multifocal electroretinography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, and fundus autofluorescence Advances in treatment of macular edema and age-related macular degeneration with anti-VEGF therapy Summaries of the latest and most important clinical trials Richly illustrated with more than 700 color state-of-the art retinal images and surgical procedure drawings Clinical pearls, controversies, and special considerations highlighted in color boxes in every chapter This up-to-date, clinically-oriented resource will greatly benefit ophthalmology residents and ophthalmologists with comprehensive practices.

In the last 30 years, the field of vitreoretinal disease has rapidly evolved into a complex medical/surgical specialty that incorporates a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Even for specialists, it is difficult to keep up with the constant flow of new clinical information; for the general ophthalmologist it is almost impossible. This book fills the gap by offering an up-to-date, clinically oriented, one-volume source that covers the full spectrum of medical and surgical vitreoretinal diseases. Although comprehensive in scope, the book is designed to highlight important points and "pearls" of information in a modern essentials format, making it ideal for everyday use by the specialist and generalist alike. This beautifully illustrated text begins with a basic overview of ocular embryology, anatomy, and physiology, and moves on to the latest diagnostic tools, individual disease states, and specific vitreoretinal procedures. Throughout, there are important management tips and guidelines that can easily be applied in everyday practice.

Clinical Atlas Of Peripheral Retinal Disorders written by Keith M. Zinn and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

A comprehensive understanding of diseases of the peripheral retina is essential to the general ophthalmologist as well as to the vitreoretinal surgeon. Expertise in in direct ophthalmoscopy, scleral depression, and contact lens biomicroscopy serves as a basis for observing the peripheral retina. These observations are then re corded on fundus drawing paper and the Tolentino vitreo-retinal chart. This or derly sequence of skills allows the ophthalmic surgeon to objectively diagnose and evaluate specific peripheral retinal disorders and plan for their therapeutic management. The Clinical Atlas of Peripheral Retinal Disorders is a compilation of fundus paint ings by David A. Tilden based on our observations of a large number of patients over the past 15 years. The atlas is organized along functional and anatomical lines. After a brief introduction to the clinical anatomy of the peripheral retina, the appearance of the fundus as a function of skin color and aging is presented. Many of the diseases of the peripheral retina can be divided into trophic (nutritional), tractional, and a combination of trophic plus tractional etiologies. This classifica tion system, although somewhat simplistic, appears adequate for our present level of understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these disorders. Un doubtedly, once the molecular biology of these conditions is elucidated through future research, the classification will be revised. In addition, there are other con ditions that affect the peripheral retina that do not fit the proposed classification system and are covered under separate headings, i. e.
