Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 1 Mr. Grey was a gentleman who had suc ceeded, when the heat of youth was over, to the enjoyment of a life-interest in an estate of about 2000 per annum. He was a man of distinguished literary abilities, and he had hailed with no slight pleasure, his succession to a for tune, which, though limited in its duration, was still a very great thing for a young Zit terateur about town; not only with no pro fession, but with a mind utterly unfitted for every species of business. Grey, to the asto nishment of his former friends, the wits, made an excellent domestic match; and, leaving the whole management of his household to his lady, felt himself as independent in his mag nificent library, as if he had never ceased to be that true freeman, A man or chambers. Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 4 The green and bowery Summer had passed away. It was midnight when two horsemen pulled up their steeds beneath a wide oak which, with other lofty trees, skirted the side of a winding road in an extensive forest in the south of Germany. By heavens! Said one, who apparently was the master we must even lay our cloaks I think under this oak; for the road winds again, and assuredly cannot lead now to our village. Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 2 Vivian had, unbidden, seated himself by the side of Mr. Cleveland's library-table; and, not knowing exactly how to proceed, was employing himself by making a calculation, whether there were more black than white spots on the body of the old Newfoundland, who was now appar ently most happily slumbering. Well, Sir continued the Newfoundland's master, the nature of your communication I am fond of coming to the point. Excerpt from Key to Vivian Grey, Vol. 1 of 3: A Complete Exposition of the Royal, Noble, and Fashionable Characters Who Figure in the Most Extraordinary The spring-tide of Fashion has just set in upon London; the boxes of the Opera are filled on every night of performance, with jewelled peeresses and other dames of high blood; the stately mansions in the country are getting more and more empty; parliament is assembled, and the continuation of Vivian Grey is to be found in every drawing room west of Portland Place, and, we suspect, in the more tender recesses of the boudoirs oi the young and fair; in which latter places we are afraid our adventurer will be found rather a dangerous companion. The public are not now to be told to what class of novels this work belongs; nor, in elucidating some of its mysteries, do we desire to be considered as vindicating the sarcastic and personal vein which the author has chosen to adopt. We think it impossible that any one can conscientiously declare that he approves of the practice of dragging into the open light of day, the frailties and infirmities of private individuals, and exhibiting them under the most ludicrous aspects for the entertainment of the public; but, reprehensible as this is, it cannot be denied that it is highly attractive to all classes, and to persons of all opinions, those who are foremost in censuring it, being also foremost in their eagerness to participate in the diversion it affords. Excerpt from Vivian Grey, Vol. 1 of 2 The Young Duke or Henrietta Temple. Even Dis raeli's satiric squibs, in the manner of Lucian and Swift, which seem to us among the most durable ornaments of light literature in the days of William IV., were read and were laughed at, but were not critically appraised. So, too, at the middle period of Disraeli's literary life, such books as Com'ngsby and Tancred were looked upon as amusing commentaries on the prog ress of a strenuous politician, not by any means, or by any responsible person, as possible classics of our language. And at his third period, the ruling criti cism of the hour was aghast at faults which now entertain us, and was blind to sterling merits which we are now ready to acknowledge. Shortly after his death, perhaps his most brilliant apologist was fain to admit that if Disraeli had been undistinguished as a speaker, his novels would have been as the flowers of the field, charming for the day which was passing over them, and then forgotten. It is only within the last decade that a conviction has been gaining ground that some of these books were in themselves durable, not because they were the work of a man who be came Prime Minister of England and made his sover eign Empress of India, but as much or as little as if they had been composed by a recluse in a hermitage. This impression has now become so general with en lightened critics that the danger seems to be that we should underrate certain excesses of rhetoric and the Corinthian mode, the errors of which used to be over emphasized, but should not, in a comparative survey of Victorian literature, be overlooked as serious draw backs to our perfect enjoyment of the high-spirited.
