Le livre explore ces mutations douloureusement vécues. Se dessine alors une identité citadine inquiète, marquée par l'exacerbation des tensions dans une société anciennement cloisonnée et hiérarchisée en groupes statutaires semblables à des castes, et qui porte l'empreinte de crispations croissantes. Ce livre constitue avant tout un tableau actuel et vivant de la vie quotidienne des Tananariviens, de la ville aux quartiers, de la rue à la maison.
