Tananarive n'est pas pour autant une ville neuve ni même une création coloniale. Il s'agit de la très ancienne capitale des rois Merina, dont le paysage urbain original rappelle les origines asiatiques du peuplement insulaire. Cité royale et sacrée située au cœur d'une opulente plaine rizicole, reflet d'un pouvoir centralisé. Tananarive ne pouvait que devenir le symbole de l'identité merina. or cette Tananarive mythique a été altérée par les métamorphoses qu'a connues la ville depuis le XIXe siècle. Le livre explore ces mutations douloureusement vécues. Se dessine alors une identité citadine inquiète, marquée par l'exacerbation des tensions dans une société anciennement cloisonnée et hiérarchisée en groupes statutaires semblables à des castes, et qui porte l'empreinte de crispations croissantes. Ce livre constitue avant tout un tableau actuel et vivant de la vie quotidienne des Tananariviens, de la ville aux quartiers, de la rue à la maison. A travers les nombreux témoignages des habitants, c'est le foisonnement de la vie urbaine qui surgit : travail, loisirs, fêtes... Au-delà de cette géographie du quotidien, c'est aussi la question du vivre ensemble qui est posée. Alors que la majorité de la population mondiale est désormais urbaine et que la majorité de ces citadins se trouve déjà dans les pays en développement, la ville doit-elle apparaître comme l'espace de l'intégration sociale ou comme celui du cloisonnement. de la fragmentation et de l'exclusion ?
