O trabalho insere-se no campo de estudos da Historiografia Lingüística e analisa textos lexicográficos sobre o português do Brasil produzidos durante a segunda metade do século XIX. Os documentos utilizados como fontes primárias para a pesquisa foram o Vocabulário Brasileiro para Servir de Complemento aos Diccionários de Língua Portugueza (1853), de Braz da Costa Rubim (1817-1871), o Diccionário de Vocábulos Brazileiros (1956[1889]), do Visconde Henrique Pedro Carlos de Beaurepaire-Rohan (1812-1894), o Diccionário Brazileiro da Língua Portugueza (1889[1875/1888]) e os Estudos Lexicográficos do Dialeto Brasileiro (1942[1874/1891]), de Antônio Joaquim de Macedo Soares (1838-1905). A tese opera com a hipótese de que essas obras, aparentemente inseridas em um projeto mais amplo de edificação de um perfil para o país, poderiam ter obtido, à época de sua publicação, sucesso na defesa da autonomia e/ou da legitimidade da chamada língua brasileira, não fossem a opção pelo léxico como o principal fornecedor de argumentos e o desenvolvimento de uma prática descritiva excessivamente marcada por subjetivismos. Grande parte do trabalho foi dirigida à explicitação dos métodos empregados na confecção das obras e à depreensão das idéias a eles subjacentes. As análises indicam que os textos lexicográficos avaliados exemplificam métodos distintos, mas semelhantes quanto à manipulação de um conceito pouco apurado de língua.
