Written by experts in the field, this book explains the principles of effective vocabulary instruction for the modern language classroom. While many language classrooms rely on practices which can be outdated, idiosyncratic or ill-advised, this book overviews the research and background necessary to successfully integrate vocabulary instruction into the curriculum in a systematic way. Starting with the common gaps in vocabulary instruction, Milton and Hopwood demonstrate how students’ development of a large, communicative lexicon, with an understanding of word structure and collocations, is an essential component of language instruction. The book addresses goal setting, curriculum design, word selection, how words are learned, learning in and outside of the classroom and more. It also addresses common myths about teaching vocabulary in the United Kingdom and around the world. This comprehensive text fills an important gap in the literature and is ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in world language/foreign language methods and language methods courses.

The chapters in this book address what has so far been an under-researched aspect of classroom needs analysis, exploring the influence of vocabulary tests, the lexical profiles of teaching materials, and learner as well as teacher beliefs and practices. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of applied linguistics and TESOL, language teachers and teacher trainers, and educators engaged in assessment and evaluation.

Improving Foreign Language Teaching provides teachers and teacher trainers with a research-based structure for the effective teaching and assessment of second languages. Improving Foreign Language Teaching also presents practical activities, related materials, and guidance on how student progress can be monitored and recorded. Based on the research of the authors and other international experts, together with the work of a consortium established by the authors and teachers in a range of secondary schools, the book focusses on the development of language skills and communicative competence. It also proposes an assessment system which better reflects how learners progress in language learning than current models. Taking as its starting point the challenge of a curriculum in flux and complex pedagogical approaches, this book offers clear research-informed guidance for effective planning, teaching and learning. It will be essential reading for all those concerned with the improvement of language learning and teaching in the secondary classroom.

Case Studies In Language Curriculum Design written by John Macalister and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-13 with Education categories.

Case studies are a powerful pedagogical tool for illuminating constructs and models in real-life contexts. Covering a wide range of teaching-learning contexts and offering in-depth analyses of ESL/ELT language curriculum design issues, this casebook is distinctive and unique in that each case draws on and is clearly linked to a single model presented in Nation and Macalister’s Language Curriculum Design (www.routledge.com/9780415806060), giving the book a high degree of coherence. A short commentary by the editors after each case highlights features of note and/or issues arising from it. This is a versatile text, designed to work as a companion to Language Curriculum Design (adding meaning and depth to the model presented there by relating it to a range of applications), as a stand-alone text, or as a resource for language teacher trainees, teacher educators, practicing teachers, program administrators, and materials writers in the field.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Braunschweig, course: „Teaching English as a Foreign Language: Grammar and Lexis in Context“ , language: English, abstract: In the seminar „Teaching English as a Foreign Language: Grammar and Lexis in Context“ (WS 07/08) “English-minor” students are obligated to write a term paper about an issue which fits into the course subject matter. In this case, the topic “How to teach Lexis and Dictionary Usage according to the Curriculum” was chosen. The topic can be seen as one of the most important issues because the “future-teachers” need to be aware of what is expected and demanded from them due to the curriculum. This topic and respectively this term paper is a summary of what is meant by Lexical teaching and learning. Also, the “Niedersächsiches Kerncurriulum Englisch” is exposed inside of this paper in order to reveal the teaching/learning expectations related to Lexis. An obviously important question is “How is Lexis learned and being taught in school and how can dictionaries help to acquire a language?” Furthermore, in this case, the curriculum has to be considered as well. This term paper describes some of the opportunities German teachers have, according to the curriculum, to enhance Lexis acquisition especially with the addition of using a particular dictionary. It mainly deals with the ideas of the Lexical Approach (Michael Lewis). The Lexical part of language acquisition is seen as the most important one within this approach. The term paper creates a relationship between how Lexis is involved in “ideal” language acquisition and the national standards of the particular German school curriculum (in this case “Hauptschule” is reflected on). As a result, it shows whether there is a conflict between language acquisition referring to the Lexical Approach and curriculum guidelines or unison between those two aspects. In order to do so, both parts of the discussion are particularly identified. To describe and define the most important expressions, the paper starts with the definitions of Lexis, vocabulary, grammar, Lexical Approach and Lexis teaching in school. Then, different types of dictionaries and dictionary usage in school are portrayed. After that, the “Niedersächsiches Kerncurriculum” is depicted before teaching Lexis and dictionary usage according to it is explained. Moreover, it is shown how dictionaries can possibly help to enhance language/Lexis acquisition and some examples are supplied. [...]
