Excerpt from Vocational Guidance for Girls Fortunate are we to have from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a book on the vocational guidance of girls. Mrs. Dickson has the all-round life experiences which give her the kind of training needed for a broad and sympathetic approach to the delicate, intricate, and complex problems of woman's life in the swiftly changing social and industrial world. Mrs. Dickson was a teacher for seven years in the grades in the city of New York. She then became the partner of a superintendent of schools in the business of making a home. In these early homemaking years there came from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a series of historical books for the grades which have placed her among the leading educational writers of the country. During the long sickness of her husband she filled for a while two administrative positions - homemaker and superintendent of schools. Her three children are now in high school and are beginning to plan for their own life work. With the broad training of homemaker, wife, mother, teacher, writer, and administrator, Mrs. Dickson has the combination of experiences to enable her to introduce teachers and mothers to the very difficult problems of planning wisely big life careers for our girls. The book is so plainly and guardedly written that it can also be used as a textbook for the girls themselves in connection with civic and vocational courses. The only difficulty with the book for a text is that it is so attractively written on such vital problems that the student will not stop reading at the end of the lesson. Excerpt from The Canadian Girl at Work: A Book of Vocational Guidance The object of The Canadian Girl at Work Is to assist girls in finding satisfactory employment The further aim of showing them what constitutes a right attitude toward work and toward life through work, underlies the account of each occupation. The book is meant for girls, and for the assistance of fathers and mothers, of teachers, and of those who are interested in questions of training and employment. The life of the average woman is divided, generally, into two periods of work, that of paid employment and that of home-making. No adequate scheme of training for girls can fail to take account of this fact. They should be equipped with knowledge and skill for home-making, and assisted in making the best use of their years in paid work. Happily, it appears from an investigation of the conditions affecting girls as wage-earners that the knowledge which helps them to be good home-makers is necessary to their well-being in paid employment. Technical training and skill are not more helpful to a girl at work than specialized knowledge in matters of food, clothing, health, and daily regimen. Lack of training in home-making is probably the greatest drawback which a girl in paid employment can have. Her business during her first years of paid employment may not require much skill or experience, but her living conditions require all the specialized woman's knowledge that training can give her. To bring about in the life of a girl a satisfactory connection between paid employment and home-making, and to show the home employments in their rightful place as occupations of the first importance, are necessary objectives in any book of this character. Excerpt from Vocational Guidance Report 1913-1916 Three years ago, the school management, under authority of the Board of Directors, entered upon an inquiry as to why boys and girls leave school, what and how they do after leaving, and what the schools might have done to equip them better for earning a living. This inquiry was conducted under the direction of Mrs. J. A. Reed, whose first report Seattle Chil dren in School and in Industry, published in 1915, pointed clearly to the need of further investigation. This present re port, though not conclusive in its findings, is yet so indicative of educational shortcomings and of possible remedies as to be very suggestive. The publication of the report is justified by the fact that many teachers and the public generally are interested in the problems which it discusses and because it presents a serious and continued study of conditions and effects in school and in industry. It is probably the first attempt of a school system, under taken through its own instrumentalities, to survey and pub lish conditions as found. Whatever view may be taken of it, the report treats vital issues, which are of concern to children, homes, society and industry, and addresses them squarely. Excerpt from The Vocational Guidance of Youth The increased attention to bodily health and strength in school is the natural concomitant of the awakened public interest in physical health and strength, not merely for our physical 'wel fare but also as one of our most important social resources. Quite apart from the misery ill-health or physical weakness usiially entails, it is clear that economic efficienlpy depends on it. 'the relation of a youth's physical health and vigor to success and satisfaction in his 'vocation is clear. If, possessing physical inaptitude or weak ness, he enters a pursuit that is not adapted to him, only moderate usefulness and perhaps early incapacity must be his fate. N'either he nor society can afford to take such a risk. Hence the necessity of a close relation and ultimate cooperation between all the agencies for promoting the public health and vocational guidance. Excerpt from Vocational Guidance for the Professions Vocational guidance, if it is to be of any value, must be based on facts; and the facts can be obtained by a careful survey of the vocations. With a few exceptions sons must fill the places vacated by their fathers. There must always be a fair adjustment between supply and demand. Disregarding this fundamental law, our schools are pushing two or three times too many young men toward the professions already overcrowded. The results are disastrous to the misguided youth. Every parent and teacher who knows the present antipathy to manual labor, and the false enthusiasm for white-collar jobs and the professions, should make a very careful investigation of the reasons for the choice of the professional career by a son or pupil. Every youth should be led also to make a very careful examination and take account of stock - to see whether his decision is based on social influences or on real ability.
