Resulta característica del País Vasco la proliferación de expresiones y términos que tienen un sentido propio, distinto del uso común. Tales palabras están cargadas de connotaciones a veces más importantes que su significado inmediato. Expresan ideas, pero también actitudes, posiciones doctrinales y posturas vitales, que con frecuencia cuentan más que aquéllas. Este libro describe ese lenguaje peculiar, en el que abundan metáforas, elipsis, eufemismos, frases hechas y tabúes. Su origen suele ser político y, entre otras funciones, sirve para dar y negar legitimidades, deconstruir la realidad y proyectar futuros, que primero se levantan sobre la lengua. Es un habla dinámica. Los giros cambian de sentido y con los años aparecen expresiones nuevas, que se integran de pronto en los dichos cotidianos. La hegemonía la tiene la lengua nacionalista, con expresiones tradicionales y novedosas que transportan al habla general sus nociones ideológicas. Por lo común las nuevas expresiones y sentidos proceden del nacionalismo radical, cuya presión sobre la sociedad vasca tiene su correlato en la difusión de sus conceptos, en un proceso en el que se dirime la hegemonía social. Así, al analizar las singularidades del habla vasca Voces vascas. Diccionario de uso proporciona también una visión de las tensiones políticas y de los avatares ideológicos. Lo hace a veces desde la ironía, en un tratamiento humorístico compatible con el rigor analítico. Se recogen 365 expresiones singulares, que constituyen una guía para aproximarse al País Vasco gestado desde la transición a la actualidad. Manuel Montero es catedrático de Historia Contemporánea y autor de numerosas publicaciones referidas al País Vasco.

Questions related to the origin and history of the Basque language spark considerable interest, since it is the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in western Europe. However, until now, there was no readily available source in English providing answers to these questions or giving an overview of past and current research in this area. The book contains both state-of-the-art papers which summarize our knowledge about particular areas of Basque historical linguistics, and articles presenting new hypotheses and points of view based on hard evidence and careful analysis. All contributors to this volume have demonstrated expertise in the topic within Basque historical linguistics that their chapter addresses. Two classical articles by the late Luis Michelena are included in English translation. In addition, the book includes studies on diachronic phonology, morphology and syntax. This book analyses the rise and decline of the Basque terrorist group Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA, Basque Homeland and Freedom). ETA declared a unilateral ceasefire in November 2011, bringing to a close a campaign of political violence that started in the late 1960s. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, the overwhelming majority of secession supporters agreed that an independent Basque homeland would be realised through ‘ballots’ and not ‘bullets’. Providing an inter-disciplinary overview of radical Basque nationalism that pays special attention to the drivers for ETA’s decline, defeat and disbandment, this book includes chapters by historians, political scientists and sociologists who offer three important theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on nationhood and security studies. Firstly the book re-assesses the military conflict that opposed ETA and the Spanish state, by paying special attention to tactical and strategic considerations as well as the counter-terrorist policy itself. Secondly it provides an original interpretation of the politics of fear which surrounded the process of victimization, as well as assessing the extent to which the issue of violence led to the polarisation of citizens. Thirdly the authors examine the historical narratives and rituals that contributed to the production and reproduction of identity binaries and memories of war. Arguing that the defeat of ETA must be contextualised within the strategic evolution of Basque nationalism, the declining resonance of the radical message and the effectiveness of the Spanish counter-terrorist effort, this book is essential reading for students and scholars working in the areas of European politics, nationalism and terrorism studies.

Políglota consumado que se manejaba por igual en ruso, alemán, francés, chino o árabe, Imanol Agire nació en Bilbao en la Nochevieja de 1913 y dedicó toda su vida al estudio profundo y sistemático de la lingüística, siendo precisamente el euskera, el idioma que él consideraba que debería haber sido su lengua materna, el último que dominó y al que quiso dedicar sus mayores esfuerzos a lo largo de los últimos veinte años de su vida. En 1961 publicó La escritura en el mundo (Euskerearen Lokariak ludi guztiko izkuntzakaz) probablemente la obra más completa publicada hasta la fecha sobre el origen, evolución y expansión en el mundo de la escritura. Años más tarde, en 1980, verá la luz la primera edición de Vínculos de la lengua vasca con las lenguas de todo el mundo, publicada por la Editorial ¨La Gran Enciclopedia Vasca". En este trabajo, tras una ingente labor de lingüística comparada, prueba la existencia de múltiples coincidencias morfológicas y fonéticas entre el euskera y centenares de otras lenguas vivas y muertas, y atribuye al euskera la condición de protolengua, cuyo origen se remontaría al paleolítico. Con su inesperado fallecimiento, en agosto de 1983, se trunca, tras el tercer volumen, su monumental Diccionario etimológico de la lengua vasca y de las lenguas de todo el mundo (Euskera erotizkoaren iztegia eta ludi guztiko izkuntzak).
