Parole, musica, immagini: sono le molteplici voci con cui i prigionieri di guerra del lager tedesco di Celle, nell'Hannover, dal 1917 alla fine della Grande Guerra nel 1918, narrano fatti, momenti di vita e situazioni in gran parte inediti. Su di essi era sceso un troppo lungo silenzio, da parte dei Comandi e del Governo in primo luogo, come se i “vinti di Caporetto”, cosí furono definiti da uno di loro, Guido Sironi, dovessero essere vinti una seconda volta e destinati per sempre all'oblio. In questo libro emerge da quel silenzio un mondo ignorato, con le sue complesse e innumerevoli storie individuali e collettive, col suo carico di umiliazioni, dolori, fatiche, fame e freddo lungamente sopportati, malattie e morte, ma anche di insopprimibile desiderio di vita. Rimasti per lo più sepolti per molti anni negli archivi familiari, diari, memorie e testimonianze ora possono riprendere voce e raccontare i pensieri, le azioni, i sentimenti dei prigionieri. ROLANDO ANNI è docente di Letteratura e Cristianesimo presso l'ISSR dell'Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Brescia, segretario scientifico dell'Archivio storico della Resistenza bresciana e dell'Età contemporanea della medesima Università. Fondatore del Centro Studi Musica e Grande Guerra. Studia la prima guerra mondiale, il Fascismo, la Resistenza, la Ricostruzione, la musica klezmer e i canti yiddish della cultura ebraica dell'Europa orientale. Tra le sue pubblicazioni: G. MIRCO CARRATTIERI è presidente di Istoreco (Reggio Emilia) e consigliere dell'Insmli. Coordina la rivista E-Review. Dottore di ricerca in Storia contemporanea, è stato borsista della Fondazione Salvatorelli, della Fondazione Gorrieri e della Fondazione Basso. Collabora con l'Università di Reggio Emilia. LAURO JAMES GARIMBERTI ha lavorato a lungo per un'importante azienda bancaria. Da circa trent'anni si interessa alla storia della Grande Guerra e in particolare agli aspetti della vita quotidiana in trincea. Iscritto alle più importanti associazioni del settore, conduce ricerche sulla linea del fronte italoaustriaco, in specie sul versante dolomitico. Con la sua ricca collezione di reperti ha allestito il museo Il nemico era come noi a disposizione del pubblico per attività didattiche e per frequenti mostre temporanee; è promotore e ideatore delle mostre Prigionieri dimenticati, soldati italiani nei Lager della Grande Guerra (2013) e Trincea (2014). Fondatore del Centro Studi Musica e Grande Guerra. MARIA NERONI ha una formazione artistica espressa in trenta anni di attività di progettazione edilizia, di studio e restauro di edifici storici e di design d'interni. Attività che l'ha portata nel tempo ad accostarsi anche all'artigianato artistico valorizzato in provincia di Reggio Emilia dal Consorzio Ars Canusina. Negli ultimi anni sostiene attivamente la ricerca storica sulla Grande Guerra, cura l'immagine grafica e la progettazione degli eventi espositivi proposti sul territorio. Collabora con il museo Il nemico era come noi; è promotrice e ideatrice delle mostre Prigionieri dimenticati, soldati italiani nei Lager della Grande Guerra (2013) e Trincea (2014). CARLO PERUCCHETTI. Musicista, violinista, già professore d'orchestra della Filarmonica Toscanini. Si è dedicato alla ricerca del canto popolare, pubblicando diversi studi. Da circa vent'anni si occupa della musica e dei musicisti durante la prima guerra mondiale, fonda l'Associazione Centro Studi Musica e Grande Guerra di cui è vicepresidente. Crea e organizza approfondimenti storico-musicali, spettacoli, conferenze-concerto e partecipa a convegni internazionali su questo tema. Nell'agosto 2014 partecipa al al convegno organizzato dalla British Library, dedicato a “Musica e Prima guerra mondiale”, con l'intervento Musica e musicisti italiani nei campi di concentramento della Grande Guerra. Il caso di Cellelager. È invitato come relatore a convegni sulla musica nella Grande Guerra, organizzati dalle Università di Brescia, Padova e di Roma. Tra le pubblicazioni: R. Anni, C. «Si muore senza medici, senza preti, senza suono di campane, senza visita di parenti per paura di infettazione. Speriamo che cessi altrimenti quando vieni a casa non troverai più nessuno abitante», sono le parole utilizzate da un contadino molisano per descrivere l’infierire della “spagnola”. Sono scene drammatiche che si ripetono in altre parti d’Italia, d’Europa e del globo. «Mai dalla “Morte nera” una tale piaga aveva invaso il mondo», scriverà il «New York Times». La pandemia del 1918-1919 ha effetti devastanti sulla popolazione mondiale, già provata dalla Grande Guerra. La quotidianità di donne e uomini viene sconvolta. I morti nel mondo sono 100.000.000, secondo alcune stime, in gran parte ventenni e trentenni. Eppure, l’influenza ha lasciato flebili tracce nella memoria pubblica. «Le cifre della “spagnola” sono incomparabilmente superiori», ha scritto Bianchi nel saggio introduttivo, alle statistiche di altre tragedie novecentesche «mentre le pagine dedicate all’umanità colpita dalla pandemia di un secolo fa restano nettamente inferiori. The issue of prisoners in war is a highly timely topic that has received much attention from both scholars and practitioners since the start of the military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and the ensuing legal and political problems concerning detainees in those conflicts. This book analyses these contemporary problems and challenges against the background of their historical development. It provides a multidisciplinary yet highly coherent perspective on the historical trajectory of legal and ethical norms in this field by integrating the historical analysis of war with a study of the emergence of the modern legal regime of prisoners in war. In doing so, it provides the first comprehensive study of prisoners, detainees and internees in war, covering a broad range of both regular and irregular wars from the crusades to contemporary counterinsurgency campaigns. The book revolves around two major developments: First, there has been a continuous increase in the political relevance of prisoners in war, in particular since the emergence of POW camps in the nineteenth century. Secondly, and related, the growth in the legal regime pertaining to prisoners had contradictory consequences. Whilst it enhanced the protection of prisoners in regular conflicts, its state-centric bias tends to exclude combatants who do not fit the template of regular inter-state war. Detainees in the 'war on terror' embody both tendencies, the development of which, however, is by no means a novel phenomenon. This book is a project of the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War.
