From the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter, a powerful and cathartic portrait of a country grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic—from feeling afraid and overwhelmed to extraordinary resilient—told through voices of people from all across America The Covid-19 pandemic was a world-shattering event, affecting everyone in the nation. From its first ominous stirrings, renowned journalist Eli Saslow began interviewing a cross-section of Americans, capturing their experiences in real time: An exhausted and anguished EMT risking his life in New York City; a grocery store owner feeding his neighborhood for free in locked-down New Orleans; an overwhelmed coroner in Georgia; a Maryland restaurateur forced to close his family business after forty-six years; an Arizona teacher wrestling with her fears and her obligations to her students; rural citizens adamant that the whole thing is a hoax, and retail workers attacked for asking people to wear masks; patients struggling to breathe and doctors desperately trying to save them. Through Saslow's masterful, empathetic interviewing, we are given a kaleidoscopic picture of a people dealing with the unimaginable. These deeply personal accounts make for cathartic reading, as we see Americans at their worst, and at their resilient best.

In an interconnected and globalized world, the voices of the local communities struggle to make themselves heard on the international stage. But many issues that arise within international relations have consequences for ordinary lives and are therefore closely connected. Climate change, warfare and migration are all examples of this. They are often discussed in abstract terms with relation to international diplomacy, but threaten the actual livelihoods of small communities and ordinary people. This was the setting of the conference ‘Global Crisis, Local Voices’, held in May 2018. This journal is a compilation of the papers presented at that conference, which was the second ‘DEN International Student Conference’. The conference and this publication is one of the many projects that the Democratic Education Network (DEN) is responsible for since its launch in 2016. This book is a collection of diverse works, all written by student authors from a range of different universities. From Democracy and Ideology, to Climate Change and China, it covers numerous concepts, ideas and geographical regions, that are often found in the studies of Politics and International Relations. This book is the result of passion and hard work from all students involved in its production and it is a project that we in DEN are incredibly proud of and hope to continue in the future. “I encourage you to read these publications to catalyse views in you that stimulate great debate that helps you become part of the compassionate, progressive and responsible movement of young people that will help overcome injustices in the world and make the world a better place.” Dr Peter Bonfield OBE FREng Vice-Chancellor and President University of Westminster

Peasants of remote history rarely speak to us in their own voices, but Thomas Bisson's engagement with the records of several hundred twelfth-century rural Catalonians enables us to hear these voices. Bisson describes these peasants socially and culturally, showing how their experience figured in a wider crisis of power during the twelfth century.

When a crisis breaks out, it’s not always just the organization that reacts - the news media, customers, employees, trade associations, politicians, activist groups, and PR experts may also respond. This book offers a new and original perspective on crisis communication based on the theory of the Rhetorical Arena and the so-called multivocal approach. According to this approach, we gain a more dynamic and complex understanding of organizational crises if we focus not only on the communication produced by the organization but also take into account the many other voices who start communicating when a crisis breaks out. It provides: An in-depth overview of the five key dimensions of organizational crises, crisis management and crisis communication A comprehensive introduction to the theory of the Rhetorical Arena and the multivocal approach to crisis communication, including some of the most important voices inside the arena A series of important international case studies and case examples in each chapter. Suitable for students studying crisis communication modules on corporate communication, public relations, and management and organization studies courses.

Rooted and Rising is for everyone who worries about the climate crisis and seeks spiritual practices and perspectives to renew their capacity for compassionate, purposeful, and joyful action. Leah Schade and Margaret Bullitt-Jonas gather twenty-one faith leaders, scientists, community organizers, theologians, and grassroots climate activists to offer wisdom for fellow pilgrims grappling with the weight of climate change. Acknowledging the unprecedented nature of our predicament—the fact that climate disruption is unraveling the web of life and threatening the end of human civilization—the authors share their stories of grief and hope, fear and faith. Together, the essays, introductory sections, and discussion questions reveal that our present crisis can elicit a depth of wisdom, insight, and motivation with power to guide us toward a more peaceful, just, and Earth-honoring future. With a foreword by Mary Evelyn Tucker and a special introduction by Bill McKibben, the book presents an interfaith perspective that welcomes and challenges readers of all backgrounds.

Longstreth Lester Milbrath - Stephen S. Morse - Hugh Pitcher John Poppy - Van Rensselaer Potter - Ellen K. Silbergeld - James A. Swan Voices from the Gathering Storm is an important book that presents a broad view of our environmental predicament. It puts its finger on a crucial part of the problem: something deep down is wrong; we are guided by antiquated systems of beliefs, ethics, and religions unsuited for today's global, industrial, corporate world. As currently perceived, corporations are guided of necessity by one principle, maximizing profits, a principle that is leading ultimately to irreversible environmental disaster. The book tells us that only a religious revolution can bring about the needed change in the structure of corporations and their relation to society. Those concerned about the unthinking, dangerous way we are approaching our future should read this book. - Peter Seidel, environmental architect and author of Invisible Walls: Why We Ignore the Damage We Inflict on the Planet. . .and Ourselves The devastation toward which the trends examined [in this book] point defies imagination. Yet there is little sign that they are being met with anything other than massive denial. The authors are to be commended for continuing to call attention to the symptoms, and sound the alarm that might awaken some from the slumberof the status quo. . .Without the voices of solid science and concerned intelligence, there is little prospect for avoiding the looming apocalypse. Ironically, perverted religious views play a large role in contributing to the magnitude of the problem, whereas the central values of religion at its best, advocating love for and stewardship of all creation, offer solid grounds for rational hope for survival of humanity and the welfare of this planet. May the readers of this volume benefit from its wisdom and may they help - against all odds - to reverse the impending tragedy. . . . - James Megivern, professor emeritus and retired chair, Dept. of Philosophy and Religion, Univ. of North Carolina at Wilmington
