Voices of Scotland is an anthology of Scottish poetry with related activities which has been designed for teachers working with students at Second and Third Levels of Curriculum for Excellence. It is the product of the Education Committee of the Association for Scottish Literary Studies. From their wide experience of teaching in Scottish schools, the members of the committee selected poems which are accessible and enjoyable and give students a flavour of the richness and breadth of Scotland's literary and linguistic heritage from the earliest ballads to contemporary writing. The selection covers a broad range of themes and reflects the linguistic variety of Scottish poetry and, in particular, the diverse voices of Scotland today.A wide range of reading, writing, listening and talking activities cover many of the outcomes for English. These activities are in no way prescriptive or exhaustive, but are designed to give an idea of how best the poems could be taught and explored. Suggestions are given for students to create their own imaginative responses in writing and drama and to further develop their work into other areas of the curriculum.

Looking at some of the aspects of the social history of Scotland from 1745 to 1960, this book uses such themes as work, love, celebration, religion, sickness, shopping and travel, to illustrate the history of ordinary people doing everyday things. Subjects and incidents cited include William Cobbett visiting a peasant bothy outside Edinburgh in 1832, a first-hand account of the Glasgow tenements between the wars, middle-class affluence in early 19th century Edinburgh and life both above and below stairs in the grand houses of the gentry in the 1950s. There is reportage from the Clearances set beside the letters and diary entries of the first recreational explorers of the Highlands - the sportsmen and tourists.

Neal Ascherson is one of Britain's finest writers in an undefinable genre that fuses history, memoir, politics and meditations on places. His books on Poland and his collected essays on the strange Britain to which he returned from Europe in the mid-1980s were deeply influential. In 1995, Black Sea won critical praise in many languages and several literary prizes. Stone Voices is Ascherson's return to his native Scotland. It is an exploration of Scottish identity, but this is no journalistic rumination on the future of that small nation. Ascherson instead weaves together a story of the deep past - the time of geology and archaeology, of myth and legend - with the story of modern Scotland and its rebirth. Few writers in these islands have his ability to write so well about the natural context of history.
