2020 jährt sich die Volksabstimmung über die deutsch-dänische Grenze zum 100. Mal. Die beiden Abstimmungen in der 1. Zone am 10. Februar 1920 in Nordschleswig und am 14. März 1920 in der 2. Zone im nördlichen Mittelschleswig haben damals die Menschen in der Region erheblich emotionalisiert und politisiert. Letztlich haben die beiden Abstimmungen aber zu einer Grenze geführt, die seit 100 Jahren Bestand hat und selbst Erschütterungen wie das unsägliche Dritte Reich überstanden hat. Zudem konnten die nationalen Minderheiten erfolgreich integriert werden. Hier werden zum Teil lokale Dokumente erstmals veröffentlicht, über die die Forschung bisher nicht verfügte. Geprägt waren die nationalen Auseinandersetzungen 1920 auch durch die Aktivitäten zweier bedeutender Persönlichkeiten, Hans Peter Hanssen auf dänischer und Adolf Köster auf deutscher Seite. Ihr besonnenes Wirken hat maßgeblich zur Beruhigung der erhitzten Gemüter in der Grenzregion beigetragen. Von daher wird aufbauend auf strukturgeschichtlichen Grundlagen deren persönlicher Beitrag entsprechend gewürdigt.

Robert Knight's book examines how the 60,000 strong Slovene community in the Austrian borderland province of Carinthia continued to suffer in the wake of Nazism's fall. Though Austria was re-established in 1945 as Hitler's 'first victim', many Austrians continued to share principles which had underpinned the Third Reich. Long treated as both inferior and threatening prior to the rise of Hitler and then persecuted during his time in power, the Slovenes of Carinthia were prevented from equality of schooling by local Nazis in the years that followed World War Two, behavior that was tolerated in Vienna and largely ignored by the rest of the world.
