Niemand wird davon ausgenommen; jedoch reagiert jeder Mensch unterschiedlich. Mancher nimmt "eine schwierige Zeit" klaglos hin und ein anderer trägt seine Gefühle nach außen. Das Auf und Ab der menschlichen Empfindungen ist meist ein vorübergehender Zustand, der völlig natürlich kommt und wieder verschwindet. Trauer und Melancholie, um nur zwei geläufige Begriffe zu nennen, können jedoch auch krankhaft werden. Wenn Intensität, Dauer und Häufigkeit dieser Phasen immer ausgeprägter werden, können sie in einer Depression münden. Ziel dieser Masterarbeit ist eine gesundheitswissenschaftliche Darstellung der Depression in der heutigen Gesellschaft. Hierzu werden aktuelle epidemiologische Untersuchungen zur Häufigkeit der Depression in Deutschland vorgestellt. Die ermittelten Fallzahlen veranlassen, sowohl in der öffentlichen Berichterstattung, als auch in der Fachliteratur, immer mehr Autoren zur Verwendung des Ausdrucks "Volkskrankheit" als Umschreibung für die Brisanz des Themas und die Ausmaße der Verbreitung in der Bevölkerung. Die Masterarbeit geht der Frage nach, inwieweit der Begriff in diesem Zusammenhang gerechtfertigt scheint und von welcher gesellschaftlichen und volkswirtschaftlichen Relevanz nach Auswertung der Literatur auszugehen ist. Die Arbeit stellt ebenfalls dar, welche Theorien die Wissenschaft zur Entstehung der Depression diskutiert. Die Entwicklung des Umgangs mit dieser Krankheit wird in einen historischen Kontext gestellt und es wird gezeigt, wie die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Einflüsse die Ansichten der Bevölkerung über die Depression und der daran erkrankten Menschen geprägt haben.
