Volunteering and its nonprofit organizations have commonly been analyzed in economic terms, with volunteering being referred to as "unpaid (productive) work". This economic definition has been around far longer than that of volunteering conceived of as leisure, which is discussed as the volitional definition. By means of a lengthy literature review, this book sets out the theoretical and empirical contributions of the serious leisure perspective to understanding volunteer motivation. This second approach began more than 40 years ago. It answers the key motivational question of why people engage in unpaid productive work, laborious or not. Since in this conception payment in cash or in kind is not an incentive to perform such work, what encourages people to volunteer? The serious leisure perspective, unlike mainstream economics, can shed considerable light on this question.

The rate of volunteering in the U.S. remains low in spite of the many positive benefits that volunteering yields. Prior research has suggested various theories to help explain motivation to volunteer. Nonetheless, none of the theories have been both comprehensive and specific enough to allow for their practical application in recruitment efforts or campaigns to increase motivations to volunteer. The purpose of the current study was to test a comprehensive model of volunteer motivation by integrating the Volunteering Functions Inventory into the Theory of Planned Behavior as behavioral and normative beliefs that influence attitudes and subjective norms. The hypothesized model also included control beliefs, which influence perceived behavioral control. The data were analyzed using latent variable path analysis and partially supported the hypothesized model. Implications for future research, policy makers, and volunteering organizations are discussed.

Sport organizations and events provide key sites for volunteer involvement, and at the same time, depend on volunteers for success. Understanding volunteer motivation and commitment may enable sport event managers to develop better recruitment, selection, training, organizing, reward, and retention strategies, and ultimately benefit the organizations, volunteers, and service recipients. The purposes of this study were to understand volunteers' demographics, motivation, commitment, and the relationships among these in elite level sport events. total of 241 volunteers from the 2008 Ryder Cup completed the web-based survey prior to the event. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling with AMOS 18.0 in an exploratory fashion to compare and explore the factorial structure of sport event volunteer motivation. A factorial structure with 18 motivation items loaded on five factors (i.e., purposive, leisure, enhancement, identity, external influence) was identified moderately fitting the present data. ANOVA and MANOVA results suggested that volunteers in different demographic groups had consistent and high commitment to the event but emphasized different motivations. Multiple regression and Structural Equation Modeling both suggested that purposive, leisure, and identity motivation factors were the effective predictors of volunteer commitment. Managers could consider sport participants and spectators as a potential volunteer pool for recruitment, and use purposive motivation to predict volunteer commitment levels. Providing volunteers with opportunities to contribute to the event, get involved with the event, identify with the event, and enjoy the event could meet their motivations and facilitate the reciprocal relationship between sport and volunteerism.

Voluntourism Intrinsic Motivation Or Just Cv Building written by Stefanie Grothe and has been published by GRIN Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-23 with Travel categories.

Scientific Study from the year 2011 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, , language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the problem of volunteering whether it is an intrinsic motivation or just cv building. The paper should answer the question whether volunteering is just a positive thing for the curriculum vitae or an intrinsic motivation, and which are the real motivations for doing volunteer work. Furthermore it should be analyzed the dif-ferences in gender, the fact of doing volunteer work and the motivation and the link between volunteering and may cv building. Two Scenarios are presented and dis-cussed by linking two theories. The theory of intrinsic and extrinsic needs and the theory of the new tourism by Poon. The literature review discloses that the different motivation have been developed over time. Three empirical hypotheses should be answered by using desk research and a survey. The hypothesis could not be con-firmed because there are almost no differences between the gender and the different motivations. Especially females were examined in the empirical hypothesis because of the abolition of the military service.

Volunteers written by Marc A. Musick and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-11-28 with Social Science categories.

Who tends to volunteer and why? What causes attract certain types of volunteers? What motivates people to volunteer? How can volunteers be persuaded to continue their service? Making use of a broad range of survey information to offer a detailed portrait of the volunteer in America, Volunteers provides an important resource for everyone who works with volunteers or is interested in their role in contemporary society. Mark A. Musick and John Wilson address issues of volunteer motivation by focusing on individuals' subjective states, their available resources, and the influence of gender and race. In a section on social context, they reveal how volunteer work is influenced by family relationships and obligations through the impact of schools, churches, and communities. They consider cross-national differences in volunteering and historical trends, and close with consideration of the research on the organization of volunteer work and the consequences of volunteering for the volunteer.
