Das Buch beschreibt erstmals ausführlich die deutsche Filmgeschichte während des 1. Weltkriegs. Ausgangspunkt der Darstellung sind die von der deutschen Generalität im August 1914 ergriffenen Maßnahmen zur thematischen und institutionellen Begrenzung des Mediums. Im Verlauf der Kriegshandlungen kommt es zu einer Neubewertung und einer damit verbundenen Förderung des Films durch hohe Repräsentanten des spätwilhelminischen Kaiserreichs, wodurch die deutsche Filmbranche bis Kriegsende zur bedeutendsten in Europa wird. Die Auswertung vielfältiger Dokumente und die Berücksichtigung unterschiedlicher Facetten der Filmentwicklung führt in zahlreichen Fragen zu einer Revision bestehender Auffassungen, u.a. der Rolle und Funktion der Ufa.

Keine andere deutsche Filmfirma genießt einen solchen Ruf wie die Ufa. Im In- und Ausland war und ist ihr Name ein Synonym für großes Kino, aber auch für seine Verquickung mit verdeckten wirtschaftlichen, politischen und ideologischen Interessen. Im Dezember 1917 gegründet auf Betreiben von Militär und Deutscher Bank, entstand mit der Ufa der erste vertikal organisierte Medienkonzern in Deutschland. In den 1920er Jahren stand die Ufa für künstlerische Prestigefilme, weltweite Expansion und Popularität; unter dem NS-Regime wurde sie gleichgeschaltet und verstaatlicht und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von den Alliierten gezielt zerschlagen. Von Beginn an versuchte die Ufa eine zweigleisige Strategie – sie produzierte monumentale Spielfilme für den Export und Genrekino für den nationalen Markt. Die Filme stellten einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur Mobilmachung der Bevölkerung zu Beginn des Krieges dar und wurden im Laufe des Krieges als Band zwischen Heimat und Front gesehen. Der Kinobesuch wurde zum festen Bestandteil der Alltagskultur. Zudem wurden die Grundlagen für die Entwicklung von mittelständischen Firmen zu modernen Filmkonzernen gelegt und neue Filmgattungen entstanden.

Weltkrieg, Weimarer Republik, Note: 2, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, 23 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll es um den deutschen Film gehen, der im Ersten Weltkrieg zum modernen Massenmedium avancierte. Neu an diesem Krieg war u.a. eine allumfassende Massenpropaganda, welche durch den technischen Fortschritt möglich gemacht werden konnte. Es wurden verschiedenste Medien als Träger von Propaganda genutzt, dabei wurden auch neue Propagandamedien, insbesondere der Film, entdeckt. Die filmische Kriegsberichterstattung und der Kriegs-Spielfilm wurden geboren. Ich möchte der Frage nachgehen, welchen Stellenwert der deutsche Film als neues Propagandamittel bereits 1914-1918 inne hatte, welcher dann spätestens im Dritten Reich ein wesentlicher Faktor politischer Beeinflussung wurde. Der Propagandaaspekt des Films in Deutschland während des Ersten Weltkriegs wird also Schwerpunkt meiner Arbeit sein, weniger filmpolitische und filmwirtschaftliche Entwicklungen. Die Arbeit ist chronologisch in zwei Hauptteile aufgeteilt. Der erste Teil wird sich mit der deutschen Filmpropaganda in der ersten Kriegshälfte beschäftigen, in welcher der Film als Propagandamittel noch recht zaghaft in Betracht gezogen und entsprechend wenig gefördert wurde. Der darauf folgende Teil thematisiert die Neubewertung des Films als Propagandamedium in der zweiten Kriegshälfte, die schließlich die Gründung der traditionsreichsten deutschen Filmgesellschaft Universum Film AG aus Propagandazwecken zur Folge hatte und dadurch die deutsche Filmbranche bis Kriegsende zur bedeutendsten in Europa wurde.

Shell Shock Cinema explores how the classical German cinema of the Weimar Republic was haunted by the horrors of World War I and the the devastating effects of the nation's defeat. In this exciting new book, Anton Kaes argues that masterworks such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, The Nibelungen, and Metropolis, even though they do not depict battle scenes or soldiers in combat, engaged the war and registered its tragic aftermath.
