Die Untersuchung f„ngt bei ihren ersten Fotografien der Serie WOMEN OF ALLAH an und reicht bis zu ihrer letzten Installationsreihe WOMEN WITHOUT MEN. Das Kunststck, zuerst frs Museum geschaffen, war die Grundlage fr ihren ersten Kinofilm unter dem gleichen Titel. Shirin Neshat orientiert sich in ihren Arbeiten an der Frauenliteratur aus dem persischen Raum wie Forough Farrokhzad und Shahrnush Parispur, Autorinnen, die aufgrund ihrer feministischen Werke verbannt wurden und ihr Land verlassen mussten. Neshat sch”pft aus dem Reichtum der persischen Kultur und Geschichte und schafft somit eine neue Form des Kinos in der westlichen Welt, die Hamid Dabashi mit "accendet cinema" bezeichnet. Ausgangspunkt dieser Untersuchung war die Frage, unter welchen Bedingungen Knstler schaffen, die ihren Kulturkreis verlassen und sich in einer anderen Kultur einfinden. Bei Shirin Neshat war das der kulturelle Schock, den sie in ihrem eigenen Land nach einer 17-j„hrigen Abwesenheit erlebt hatte. Die Ver„nderungen nach der Revolution 1979 hinterlieáen eindeutige Spuren: Verbote und Gebote, mit denen das persische K”nigreich in die Islamische Republik Iran umgewandelt wurde. Neshat entschied sich aufgrund dessen, fr ihre knstlerische Laufbahn doch nach Amerika zurckzukehren, wo sie als Folge ihre Fotoserie WOMEN OF ALLAH schuf und schnell an Popularit„t gewann. Die Studie besch„ftigt sich mit der knstlerischen und filmischen Žsthetik, die sich durch die einzelnen Schaffensperioden der Knstlerin konstant durchzieht.

Minoru Onoda is best known as a member of Gutai, Japan's first postwar radical artistic movement, which challenged what it saw as the rigid, reactionary ideologies of the art of the time and initiated new ones that redefined the relationships among matter, time, and space. Concurrent to the inception of Gutai, Onoda became enchanted by concepts of repetition, producing paintings and drawings with amalgamations of gradually increasing dots and organically growing shapes. But less is known in the West about Onoda's early and late-career work. At long last, this first full book on Minoru Onoda introduces him as an artist in his own right. Apart from his role with Gutai, the book mines Onoda's sketchbooks and completed works to explore his creative process over time, from his artistic education in the 1960s at the Osaka Institute of Fine Arts and the Osaka School of Art to his later works following the 1972 disbanding of Gutai, which see the artist moving toward a monochrome and more conceptual style.
