Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Geschichte Deutschlands - Nachkriegszeit, Kalter Krieg, Note: 1,0, Freie Universität Berlin (Geschichts- und kulturwissenschaftliches Institut), Veranstaltung: Antisemitismus und Antizionismus: Juden und Israel, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im November 1984 erschien in der DDR-Kinderzeitschrift "Die ABC-Zeitung" das Märchen vom kleinen "Feuerdrachen Zion", der ohne Not und nur aus Undankbarkeit und Habgier heraus das Land der "Kinder Palästinas" (Basedow 1984: 18) zerstört. Unter Rückgriff auf explizit antisemitische Stereotype stellte der Artikel den Nahostkonflikt nicht nur vereinfacht, sondern als alleinig von Israel zu verantworten dar. Da die ABC-Zeitung das propagandistische Organ des Zentralrates der Freien Deutschen Jugend (FDJ) und mithin parteinah war, lag dieser antizionistischen Darstellung sicherlich kein ärgerliches Versehen, wohl aber eine direkte oder indirekte Vorgabe der ostdeutschen Staatsführung zugrunde. Dass eine solch einseitige Verzerrung der politischen Realitäten in Nahost auch tatsächlich beabsichtigt war, erklärt sich aus der dezidiert israelfeindlichen Politik, die von der SED bis in die späten 1980er Jahre betrieben wurde. Verwundern muss indes, dass sich diese antizionistische Agitation nur wenige Jahre nach dem Ende der Shoah im marxistisch-leninistischen deutschen Teilstaat mit traditionellen antisemitischen Feindbildern schmückte, verstand sich die DDR doch in ihrem Selbstverständnis als genuin antifaschistischer Staat, der die deutsche judenfeindliche Vergangenheit endgültig hinter sich gelassen habe. In der folgenden Arbeit soll diesem vermeintlichen Widerspruch nachgespürt werden. Während zunächst eine Antwort auf die Frage gefunden werden muss, weshalb und inwiefern die DDR ein antizionistischer Staat war, ist im Anschluss daran zu untersuchen, weshalb und inwieweit sich der jedenfalls in der öffentlichen Debatte tabuisierte klassische Antisemitismus in einer ausdrücklichen Feindschaft gegen Israel wiederfinden konnte (vgl. Voigt 2008). Ziel der folgenden Ausführungen ist es also nicht, etwaige antisemitische und antizionistische Tendenzen innerhalb der Bevölkerung oder Versäumnisse im historischen und gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit dem millionenfachen Mord an den europäischen Juden aufzudecken. Wohl aber soll dargestellt werden, dass die DDR ein Land war, in dem sich aus politischen und ideologischen Gründen etwas herausbilden konnte, das als "antisemitischer Antizionismus" (Haury 2016: 11) bezeichnet werden muss.

Dabei mussten sie sehr viel Leid erfahren. Verächtung, Verleumdung, Vertreibung und letztendlich sogar der Versuchung der Ausrottung in der NS- Zeit von 1933 bis 1945 mussten sie über sich ergehen lassen. Ob in der Antike, im Mittelalter oder in der Neuzeit wurden sie nie anerkannt. Das Leben der Juden in Deutschland nach Kriegsende 1945 entsteht auf Grund einer langen aber jedoch auch sehr wechselvollen deutsch- jüdischen geschichtlichen Beziehung. Zwei entscheidende Faktoren für diese Beziehung ist zum Einen die aufkommende Judenemanzipation in Europa jedoch auch die schon sehr lang zurückliegende Erscheinung des Antisemitismus. Zunächst werde ich diese Grundlagen, wie zum Beispiel die Begrifflichkeit des Antisemitismus und des Zionismus überblicksartig präsentieren, bevor ich speziell auf die Situation der Juden in der DDR nach der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus eingehen werde. Insbesondere werde ich die Art und Weise der Bewältigung dieser düstersten Zeit der deutschen Geschichte beleuchten. Meine Aufmerksamkeit wird dabei besonders der gesamtgesellschaftlichen sowie der politischen Perspektiv gelten. Man muss jedoch erwähnen, das diese Arbeit lediglich ein Auszug sowie der Versuch einer Skizzierung des jüdischen Leben in der DDR sein kann, da der Rahmen für eine detaillierte Aufarbeitung der jüdischen Geschichte nach 1945 in Deutschland bei weitem nicht ausreichen kann! Als Einführungsliteratur zum Thema wäre das Buch "Jüdisches Leben in der DDR" von Robin Ostow zu empfehlen. [...]

Posits criteria for the definition of antisemitism: Manichaeism - polarization of good and evil forces; the personification of these in groups and a conspiracy of the evil group against the good one; and nationalism, based on the antithesis of fatherland and foe. By these criteria, early German socialism and communism were not antisemitic, despite anti-Jewish views of individual leaders, the prevalence of stereotypes, and tactical compromises of the Weimar-period Communist Party with popular antisemitism. However, Marxism-Leninism displayed the above characteristics, although the foe was not the Jews but the capitalist imperialists. This made it easy for late Stalinism to incorporate antisemitism in the existing structure in the form of anti-Zionism. Zionists were portrayed as agents of a Western capitalist-imperialist conspiracy. Judges that the East German leadership (with the exception of the security services) was not antisemitic; anti-Zionism was a tool to suppress potential rivals. The DDR's anti-Zionism had specifically German aspects: condemnation of Jewish demands for restitution as a plot to bring economic ruin on Germany, and release from guilt through the assertion that Zionists had collaborated with the Nazis, while the real victims were the German working people.

Pp. 27-158 trace the history of the Jewish communities in East Germany. During the first postwar years, there was sympathy for Jewish victims of the Holocaust, but they were less privileged than anti-fascist resistance fighters. The authorities closed the borders to Jewish refugees fleeing Polish pogroms. Some local functionaries obstructed the formation of Jewish communities. From 1950 on, Jews were under suspicion because of their links with the West. In 1953, in the wake of the Slánský trial, high-ranking Jews were expelled from the party; Jews were arrested, and many fled. After 1967 there were new attacks in the guise of anti-Zionism. Finally, in the late 1980s the regime tried to win international support by courting world Jewry. Pp. 159-382 treat specific subjects in more detail. Stresses that the regime, by definition anti-fascist, absolved its citizens (except condemned war criminals) from responsibility for the Holocaust. It denied the existence of antisemitism within its borders, in spite of frequent cemetery desecrations and the appearance in the 1980s of antisemitic Skinheads and neo-Nazis. Pp. 399-480 contain a bibliography, including archival sources and newspaper articles.
