Einerseits schöpft es sein Selbstverständnis aus der Ablehnung oder Domestizierung idolatrischer Praktiken, andererseits greift es in vielfältiger Weise auf einen Kult der Dinge zurück. In exemplarischen Untersuchungen der christlichen Dingkultur vom Spätmittelalter bis ins 19. Die frühmoderne Wissenschaftsauffassung verdichtete sich im Kabinett, wo gesammelte Gegenstände in epiphanischen Momenten des Sehens und Berührens erfahren werden konnten. Weitgehend textunabhängige, sich in Dingen konzentrierende Medienwelten entstanden im Dienst der Erinnerung an Luther, in der Gestalt des pietistischen Wissenstheaters und nicht zuletzt im Programm einer auf christliche Artefakte aufbauenden "Monumentalen Theologie". Von der Reliquie zum Ding ist das Standardwerk über Bedeutung und Wandel auratisch aufgeladener Objekte in der christlichen Kulturgeschichte.

From the visual and textual art of Anglo-Saxon England onwards, images held a surprising power in the Western Christian tradition. A Magnificent Faith explains how and why Lutheranism - a confession that derived its significance from the promulgation of God's Word - became a visually magnificent faith, a faith whose adherents sought to captivate Christians' hearts and minds through seeing as well as through hearing. Although Protestantism is no longer understood as an exclusively word-based religion, the paradigm of evangelical ambivalence towards images retains its power. This is the first study to offer an account of the Reformation origins and subsequent flourishing of the Lutheran baroque, of the rich visual culture that developed in parts of the Holy Roman Empire during the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The volume opens with a discussion of the legacy of the Wittenberg Reformation. Three sections then focus on the confessional, devotional, and magnificent image, exploring turning points in Lutherans' attitudes towards religious art. Drawing on a wide variety of archival, printed, and visual sources from two of the Empire's most important Protestant territories - Saxony, the heartland of the Reformation, and Brandenburg - A Magnificent Faith shows the extent to which Lutheran culture was shaped by territorial divisions. It traces the development of a theologically-grounded aesthetic, and argues that images became prominent vehicles for the articulation of Lutheran identity not only amongst theologians but also amongst laymen and women. By examining the role of images in the Lutheran tradition as it developed over the course of two centuries, A Magnificent Faith offers a new understanding of the relationship between Protestantism and the visual arts.

A masterful deciphering of an extraordinary art object, illuminating some of the biggest questions of the eighteenth century The Throne of the Great Mogul (1701-8) is a unique work of European decorative art: an intricate miniature of the court of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb depicted during the emperor's birthday celebrations. It was created by the jeweler Johann Melchior Dinglinger in Dresden and purchased by the Saxon prince Augustus the Strong for an enormous sum. Constructed like a theatrical set made of gold, silver, thousands of gemstones, and amazing enamel work, it consists of 164 pieces that together tell a detailed story. Why did Dinglinger invest so much time and effort in making this piece? Why did Augustus, in the midst of a political and financial crisis, purchase it? And why did the jeweler secrete in it messages wholly unrelated to the prince or to the Great Mogul? In answering these questions, Dror Wahrman, while shifting scales from microhistory to global history, opens a window onto major historical themes of the period: the nature of European absolutism, the princely politics of the Holy Roman Empire, the changing meaning of art in the West, the surprising emergence of a cross-continental lexicon of rulership shared across the Eastern Hemisphere, and the enactment in jewels and gold of quirky contemporary theories about the global history of religion.
