Der in Nola geborener italienischer Philosoph, der nach seiner Geburtsstadt auch "der Nolaner" genannt wird, verband die neuplatonische Auffassung von der Welt als unendlichem Universum mit der stoischen Naturlehre von der alles belebenden Weltseele.In seiner Schrift "Über die Ursache, das Prinzip und das Eine" gibt er seine philosophische Weltsicht in Dialogform an die Nachwelt weiter. Danach ist die Weltseele das "formale und konstitutive Prinzip ", die als "wahre Wirklichkeit" und "wahre Form aller Dinge" "überall die Herrin der Materie" ist und "in gewissen Abstufungen die gesamte Materie" erfüllt.Für einen personalen Gott bleibt in diesem Weltbild kein Raum. Gott ist für ihn über substanziell und damit schlichtweg dem philosophischen Denken entzogen. Bedeutend sind seine Lehrgedichte. Sein Denken war am scholastischen Aristotelismus und Lukrez geschult und ging von der "pythagoreischen" Lehre des Kopernikus aus. Noch an das Mittelalter gebunden, vertrat er im Rahmen des Neuplatonismus der Renaissance sein von dichterischer Anschauungskraft belebtes einheitliches pantheistisches Weltbild.

He finished four novels, left a fifth unfinished, and wrote dozens of short stories that treat themes of youth, despair, and age. He was married to Zelda Fitzgerald.

Als er mit 15 Jahren in den Dominikanerorden eintrat bekam er den Ordensnamen Giordano. Bruno interessierte sich jedoch so stark für die Natur und die wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen seiner Zeit und damit auch für die weltlichen Studien, dass er sich dazu entschloss, den Orden zu verlassen. Da dies damals nicht gern gesehen war, war sein darauf folgendes Leben von Wanderschaften und Reisen geprägt. Es führte ihn zuerst nach Genf und dann nach Frankreich, wo er in Paris Vorlesungen hielt. Unterbrochen wurde sein Leben in Paris von einem Aufenthalt in England, wo er in Oxford und London lebte und lehrte. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Paris ging er nach Deutschland, um in Marburg, Wittenberg, Prag, Helmstedt und Frankfurt Zuhörer für seine Lehren zu finden. Jedoch war dies für ihn ebenso enttäuschend, wie die Tatsache, dass er keinen Verleger für seine Schriften finden konnte, da diese alle Angst vor der Inquisition und den Folgen dieser hatten. Nach 15 Jahren folgte auf Einladung eines Venezianers die Rückkehr nach Italien, aber auch der Verrat an die Inquisition und die Auslieferung nach Rom. Dort wurde er sieben Jahre gefangen gehalten und schließlich zum Tode auf dem Scheiterhaufen verurteilt. Am 17. Februar 1600 starb Giordano Bruno. "Als man ihm das Kruzifix vorhielt, wandte er sich mit finsterer Miene verächtlich ab." Bruno schrieb in der italienischen Sprache und nicht auf Latein. Seine Philosophie basiert trotz Kosmologie eher auf Gefühl als auf Wissenschaft. Bezüglich seiner Werke sind außer "Von der Ursache, dem Prinzip und dem Einen" (1584) auch noch "Vom Unendlichen, dem All und den Welt

In »De la causa, principio et uno« (wahrscheinlich 1584) entwirft Giordano Bruno so etwas wie seine 'Metaphysik', d. h. seine Prinzipienlehre oder Theorie der ersten Ursachen des Seins. Die hier fundierten Theoreme bleiben für die Arbeiten der Londoner Zeit insgesamt verbindlich, sie werden höchstens aus anderen Perspektiven – etwa der ethisch-praktischen oder der kosmologischen – ergänzt. Vor dem Hintergrund einer radikalen Kritik an traditionellen Mustern des Denkens, insbesondere des Aristoteles und der an ihn anknüpfenden scholastischen Tradition, gelangt Bruno zu einer radikalen Umdeutung der Kosmologie, indem er bis dahin gültige qualitative Differenzierungen einebnet und die Materie durch die Vorstellung, dass permanenter Wechsel das einzig Stabile sei, sowie eine Implantierung des Geistigen in das materielle Grundsubstrat aufwertet. Brunos in brillanter rhetorischer Manier durchgeführte, äußerst vielfältige Argumentationskunst zielt dabei auf einen radikalen Monismus, der in letzter Konsequenz zu einer Zusammenführung der in der Tradition auseinandergehaltenen Ursachen führt, ja sogar dazu, dass als einzige Ursache das Universum selbst mit dem Einen und der Materie als koextensiven Modi behauptet wird.
